Looking to buy a 17hmr just loooking for opinions/experiences leaning towards either a tiger American or a savage a17 looking to keep it under $500 sticker price. Let me know what your experinces/opinions are will be mostly taget shooting and some varmint hunting

Get a used CZ 452 Varmint or American... great rifles... excellent accuracy and fit and finish.

I will be the wildcat in this discussion....... but curious what you would like to use a .17hmr for?..... I have owned four and never found a real practical use for the cartridge...... except maybe small varmints at distance, which I just use my .223 for.......

Don't get me wrong, I like shooting them and sometimes "just because" is as good a reason as any...... but it never seemed to find its "niche" in my lineup.........

Probably get more feedback in the rimfire section.

Yup, the Rimfire subsectin will garner more attention as will some reading and rimfire central too.
The 17hmr will create havoc on gophers and jack rabbits.
Personally shot one at 100 long paces in the side of the head.
Loud thwack on impact and it didnt move far from there.
Seen gophers launched 10 feet in the air right out of their hiddie holes, good fun.
Larger quarry like Coyotes and such have yet to witness that myself , but You Tube has lots of good stuff to watch.
The only problem with you tube is the Pandoras Box of never ending video to watch.

CZ453 Varmint for me. I don't really plink with rimfires, so use the 17HMR as my only rimfire bolt gun on pests around the farm. Have a scoped 9422M as well. I know the ballistics favour the Hummer, but for bigger stuff like beavers, I still find the 22WMR puts them down harder.

A used Anschutz 1517 DHB would be a wonderful rifle but out of your target price range. Imo save up - you will like it a lot more than a Ruger American.

I like the idea of the A17 rifle, but I've never shot one. Before it, the Volquarsten was the only commercial HMR semi-auto that proved decently reliable. I could see a 10 round semi being a lot of fun ridding the world of varmints.
