In the market for new hunting boots (considering the Irish Setter 12" Elk Tracker)

My last pair of hunting/hiking boots are a pair of Wind River that I got at Marks Workhouse about 8 or so years ago, they have to be the most comfortable, warm and completely waterproof boots I've ever owned, but I'm unable to find another pair. So, I've been checking out a number of different hunting boots online and so far, I'm considering the Irish Setter 12" Elk Tracker 860 with 1000 g thinsulate insulation, they're supposed to be completely water-proof. Any of you own these boots? Are they comfortable and warm?, and are they waterproof as stated in the description? Would you recommend a different brand over the Irish Setter?

Anyway I look forward to your opinions.

I haven't tried the Irish Setters, though I've heard they're a great boot.

Since you asked about other possible boot options, I thought I'd let you know about my LaCrosse Alphaburley Sports. I got them in 1000G Thinsulate. Bowhunting all winter, I needed a good set of boots that'd keep my feet warm up in the treestand, but didn't want my feet to get too hot and sweat while getting there, so I stayed away from the heavier 2000G's. So far I've found the AB's to be super comfortable, quiet, and totally waterproof. The only gripe I have about them is that until they break in, you'll want to be careful stepping on a wet stick or rock with the arch of the foot, as it tends to be a little slippery. I'm very happy with my LaCrosse boots.

I have two pairs and happy with both.
They guarantee them for a year for leakage.
My first pair are probably 6-8 years old.
I use them only for hunting.
Put them on out in the bush and take them
off before the drive home.
Excellent stuff.
The second pair have the lesser insulation value
and are great also.
Light boots with good tread patterns.

I had a pair, used them when it got cold guiding in the Yukon and deer hunting back home. Like all leather gore tex boots they will leak as they get some miles put on. I kept mine well greased and never had a problem after I learned how to take care of my feet. I would also get a set of gaiters to keep the snow off and they help keep water out as well.

Upgraded to Elk Trackers last year, best hunting investment yet.

If your planning on sitting in cold temps for extended periods, I would get the 1000gram version. I ended up with the 600 gram and sometimes wish I had more. It is plenty when walking though.

Ive had those elk tracker boots for at least 6 years now. 1000g insulaton. Hot in september elk hunting, but great through late november whitetail. They are awesome boots! I have waded through thigh deep muskeg and came out the other side soaking wet except for my socks and feet! I put some sort of Kiwi waterproof treatment every summer before going out hunting. Buy some and you wont look back. Maybe a bit on the heavy side, but so well made. Durable, waterproof, 12 miles a day comfy, warm. Cant beat 'em. My opinion

I own 2 pair of the 1000 gram thinsulate version which i use for moose hunting up near James bay and then deer/bear hunting in eastern Ontario the rest of the fall. Outstanding boots that are warm still hunting to -15C and warm stalking in any temp. Great support. Bone dry. I alternate between pairs very other day so the humidity does not build up. I clean them after 3 months of hunting and apply a coat of liquid silicone to all seams and they are good to go for another season. These were the first boots that required no break-in period.

Have any of you guys had any issue with the sizing? I read some customer reviews today and some people say you should order 1/2 size smaller then your normal boot size because when they received theirs they turned out a little big for their feet. What do you think, should I order 1/2 size smaller then my normal size or should I order my exact size?

I have uninsulated elk trackers, I like them, seem to be holding up well. I did have to go a half size smaller than usual. My favourite boots are a pair of cabelas branded meindls with 600g thinsulate perfect for hunting in all conditions except for extended sits in really cold weather, for that I have irish setter 2000g boots.

I've got a pair of elk trackers and 2 pairs of their rubbers (rut master 800 and 1200) and they all meet and exceed my expectations. You won't regret an Irish setter product

I am very hard on boots. I used a pair of Elk Trackers as work boots in the Russian arctic for a couple of years. My feet were always warm and dry.

Much of the time they were used on abrasive rock (12 metre wide quartz vein 25 g/t gold, 200 g/t silver) like this washed ore zone exposure.

An added bonus is that they can be re-soled.

I still have a pair of Irish Setters. While they are 13B's, they fail to hold my foot in place like Danners.
I have often marveled at the Elk Trackers but could not justify the purchase when my employer was supplying Danners.

I ordered my normal boot size but went for the medium width instead of the EE option. Better fit with room for a heavy sock in cold weather. I ordered mine from Cabelas who have a great exchange/return policy.

I have a pair of Cabela's Outfitters that I bought over 10 years ago. Still very good and dry. They are 600g Thinsulate. I'll probably buy another pair, although I wouldn't be surprised if the quality has followed suit with everything else and gone downhill.

I managed to get an order through to Danner when they had that "friends and family" blunder a couple of years ago. I bought a pair of Hood Winter Lites for me and a pair of Sierra's for my wife for early season hunting. Made in the USA and rebuildable. The Danners run narrow, though.

I ended up having to get a 1/2 size larger and they are a good fit with heavy socks, a tiny bit loose with normal sport socks, but no issues with that so far.

I had the fortune of being able to try them on locally at WSS before ordering from a company in Ontario last year.

that's the thing I don't have the option of trying them on, oh well I'll have to order my size and if they turn out not right I'll just have to send them back for exchange, definitely getting the Irish Setters though.

Thanks for all the opinions guys, sure makes making decisions easier when everybody that replies stands by a product.

Thanks again, Pat

Picked up a pair of Danner Canadians this year. What an incredible boot. I have nothing negative to say about any Irish Setter product, but I much prefer my Canadians over the Elk's.

well be it what it is I just placed my order for the Irish Setter Elk Tracker. Cabelas were sold out and the only other place I could find them was Amazon .com at $199 total came to $224.86, not bad for a good boot. Hope they fit, I really don't want the hassle of having to return them for another size.

Thanks guys. Pat

I'm looking for a few good years out of this boot so I hope they're as good as everyone say's.
