I'm notorious for travelling heavy, my day pack usually weighs over 40lbs. In the foothills with an average of 2-4 miles of walking it doesn't present a problem but in the mtns I sometimes consider burning my rifle so what goes in the pack? Bare minimum excluding ammo and water(to avoid the how many cartridge/litre debate)?

#1 Ike's new Pentax spotter.
#2 Ike's binos
#3 T.P.
I cannot get away without eating so the remainder is food, some rope to pack out that 40" set of curly's, plastic bags/ cheese cloth. Lens pen for boo boos. Need some matches and dryer lint for fire play. When all is done, the day pack is around 25lbs. Pack is 5.5lb empty.

I built a survival kit...contains everything I would need to live in the bush for a couple of nights. It contains an extra knife, matches, string, some candy, first aid supplies, compass, signal mirror, wire, and flagging tape. It's all in a sealed metal tin that can be used to boil water. It only weighs about a lb, so it's not problem to carry.

In my pack I carry:
-survival kit
-pocket chainsaw
-flashlight
-chemical handwarmers
-extra gloves
-lighter
-water
-ammo
-t.p.
cell phone goes in a pocket, and knife goes on my belt

Total weight 10-12lbs. It's probably more than I'll ever need, but I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

First aid kit
Toilet paper (gause from first aid kit was too expesive. Luxurious though.)
Lighter and fire starter
Protien bars
Extra map
Extra batteries for flashlight GPS and Walkie
Para rope
Garbage bag
Sharpening stone

In addition, off the top of my head,

Headlamp (Princeton-Tec Apex)
Radio
Glowsticks
Flagging tape
Compass
Map
Toque (Blaze Orange)
Wool mitts
Wool Socks
Wool stanfield shirt
Neck gaiter
Extra batteries
Energy bars
Strike Force (flint-steel)
Garden Kneeling pad
OLFA knife (hook blades)
Folding saw
SAK Huntsman
Diamond sharpener
Lightweight Blaze orange vest
Survival blanket
Trioxane fuel tablets
Moleskin
Ductape
Gum
Otis Kit and caboodle

handful of spare shells, rangefinder, binocs, shooting stix, knife, sharpener, deer drag, deer call, hunting license

40LBS is heavy for a daypack, hell my entire sheep pack for a week is not much heavier.

I'd say for a day pack
-Bino's & Spotting Scope and rifle of course, and depending on terrain you may leave the spotting scope at home.
-A few granola bars
-bottle of water
-Lighter
-Knife
-Fleece jacket for when you stop and get chilled
-1 pair of dry socks, synthetic, no cotton in the bush ever

I have one big pack that goes everywhere with me. When I get where I am going I downsize and only take what I need for that particular hunt. Hunting in AB can take you from bald ass prarie to 7000 feet easily, so it is hard to pick what to take. I have it down to a science now, it took many years.

Most of the respones have covered the basics though. The basics in my opinion will save your life and keep you half assed comfortable, the rest is just bling :ar15:

My day pack is about 20 lbs by ther time I get food and survival stuff in. Mind you, we get quite a ways back in the bush so one has to be prepared for a survival situation.

I always take too much crap as well, I like to pack heavy at the start of the season to get into hiking shape quicker.
Binos, sp.scope, rifle and ammo (3 in the rifle, 7-9 extra), bone saw, 2 knives, sharpner, water/gaterade, little food, book, GPS, parachute cord, duct tape, flag tape, basic first aid stuff, rape whistle, deer calls, ass cushion, gaitors, rain gear, touque, gloves, wetnaps, (double as TP or help to clean up after a skinning) lots of game bags all (except the gun) in a pack on a packframe. By the end of the season I have thrown out the raingear unless it is actualy raining at the start of the hunt and I would be wearing the warmer clothing.

Haha! Good thread.

In my pack:

Small First aid kit
Water Bottle
Small Maglight
GPS
Granola Bars
Blaze orange vest
Extra gloves and hat
Matches
Knife
Lunch
Rope

I like the idea of $hit tickets. Using a sock sucks!!:)
