Ok the ever on going search for new wood....

For my No1 Mk111. Jeez guys get you mind out of the gutter.

Now I have been able to find a Enfield No. 1 MK 3 Rifle, Cal. .410

Could I use the wood from this?

Thanks all

If I recall, the .410s have a wooden plug glued in place of the magazine opening. So while the wood will fit, the challenge will come in trying to remove the plug without cracking the wood so you can use a magazine.
I used the .410 wood back when the whole gun could be picked up for $50. I used it on a no2mk4 .22 cal trainer, so the plug worked out just fine.

any one know where to get 410 shells for them as well?
It's my understanding that there are two variations to what .410 shells you would use. If the gun is origional, then the .shell was a variation of a .303 cartridge, shortened to about where it necks down. Most of these rifles that came to the North American market were reamed out to accept the commercial .410 shell.

Any hints onhow to remove the block?

Look the wood over carefully. I think some of the wood was converted .303 wood, and had the plug installed. Another variation is where the wood was made for the shotgun, and there is no plug.
I'm afraid I can't help you much with wood. While I can work miracles with metal, I am a klutz with wood. By the time I finish a simple doghouse, it usually weighs in at about 250 pounds, in my attempts to make it strong (which it usually isn't).

To remove the wood, very carefully drill a series of small (1/8 in. ) holes just inside the glueline in the plug .When you have gone all around the plug, holes as close together as possible. Then take a small sharp wood chisel about 1/4 in,and chip out the plug between drill holes. When body of plug is removed ,then take same chisel and VERY carefully pare back the remaining plug wood to the glue line. In all probbability the glue will not be stuck very well do to the oil in the stock at time of glue up.Hot water will also help remove the glue as it will be Hide glue. LOL Duker

Numrich may still have SMLE wood. Springfield Sporters also has wood off DP rifles which can be cleaned up pretty well. Lastly, new wood can be had from Lawrence Ordnance.

WRT .410 wood - some plugs are cross-dowelled into place. You'd ruin the stock removing the plug - not worth it. Especially since a decent SMLE MkIII* is only a $250-350 max.

thanks Claven.

I will not deal with Numrich so I will have to get ahold of the other two you have mentioned.

Could you PM links to them for me. Thanks
