To remove the wood, very carefully drill a series of small (1/8 in. ) holes just inside the glueline in the plug .When you have gone all around the plug, holes as close together as possible. Then take a small sharp wood chisel about 1/4 in,and chip out the plug between drill holes. When body of plug is removed ,then take same chisel and VERY carefully pare back the remaining plug wood to the glue line. In all probbability the glue will not be stuck very well do to the oil in the stock at time of glue up.Hot water will also help remove the glue as it will be Hide glue. LOL Duker
