in your humble opinion...

6.5x55, heck Ya! I would take the swede' over a 30-30 for anything beyond 100m.

Long Answer;

I would rather use a 257 Roberts with nosler partitions than a than a 30-06 with Federal Classic ammo.

I agree with Finn Aagard, and most of the guys here;

Shot placement is #1 - take the biggest gun you can shoot well! While a 300 Mag looks great on paper, I don't know too many fellows who can hit a pie plate at 100m or a dinner plate at 200m from a standing, unsupported position... With ANY gun, never mind a big magnum.

Bullet performance is #2 - a quality bullet that can hold together on impact, expand to twice (or more) it's diameter, and then penetrate is a valuable thing. Not all projectiles are equal, even if they have the same diameter and mass. There are a lot of greAt bullets out there today. Be sure to use one that was built for your purpose.

Follow rules 1 and 2, and any standard, LEGAL for big game in Canada cartridge (.243 and up) will GUARANTEE success.

I would rather use a .243 than a 7.62x39, but if one can get close enough a 22LR will do the job.

Short answer;

.243 - but I would be really picky about presentation and shot placement. Generally given the choice (and I have a few) .30-06 - don't worry about presentation. A good shot can be made a just about any angle, even his '6 o'clock'. Bang-into the hump-flop.

Vanilla that works...

30-06, Federal Fusion 150 grain
or
30-06, Remington Core-Lokt 180 gran SP

'Euro Classic' that works...

6.5x55, Norma 156 grain Vulkan
or
6.5x55, Sellier & Bellot 131/140/156 grain SP

Both will drop anything that walks in North America except, perhaps, the great bears and bison.

If I was toting my '52 Tula "supergrade" SKS with the mag filled with Prvi Partizan 123 grain soft points, I would not feel under-gunned inside 75 meters... I can hit within 4 inches at that range every time. As I state above, however, my preference these days is with 30-06 and 6.5x55 depending on my mood.
