Depends on what you mean by "best". A 1911-type pistol would have the best ergonomics and trigger, and more aftermarket support then all other handguns combined. HK USP will be the most reliable and worry-free.

"Best" is pretty open to interpretation. There's a lot you could judge by... accuracy, durability, fit and finish, price...

I've heard good things about the STI Spartan, have one on the way... The frame, slide and barrel are outsourced to Armscor Phillipines, and then internals are STI. It's apparently nice and tight and quite accurate out of the box, and costs about as much as a Norinco with work done on it.

As far as 1911's go you missed the Raptor - it's what does it for me.
As for the 45's (non 1911) I'd say;
