In your opinion what is the "best" pistol and carbine rifle combo, and why?

Too many variables.

Do you reload or will you be using mostly factory ammo? Are you looking for something to hunt with that can share ammo with a pistol at the range? Are you looking for something more tactical? Does it matter if its magazine fed? Do those magazines have to be shareable with each firearm? Are you looking to modify either of them? What range are you looking for, what power, what kidn of optics would you want to mount etc etc etc...

Just pick whatever you would choose and have fun with it. :)

I'll vote for .357, since I currently have that combo: Winchester trapper + TC Contender (which itself can become a carbine). Looking for a 686 and a IMI Timberwolf pump to move the concept up a notch. Another concept I'm working towards is a companion carbine for my CZ 52. The Soviets used the 7.62x25mm out to 250m with great effect. In a break action or a bolt you could also load something close to a .300 Whisper. QBD - even without a suppressor.

The all Canadian option: Chinese contract Inglis HP, with the shoulder stock! Trade that extra weight for more ammo.

.357 Magnum. Sorry for the fuzzy pic.

My matched caliber set was a Colt Single Action Army in .38 Special paired with a Marlin 1894 .38spl/.357mag.

Both were sold long ago and I'll be making up a match set with a Ruger Redhawk & a Rossi lever action next year in .44mag.

I like both smaller & larger calibre companion pairs.

These two in .32 H&R mag.

Then these two in .45 colt.

Also have pairs in .357 mag & .44 mag.
The idea of having both long & short guns in the same pistol cartridge lives on today....:)
To bad we couldn't use them on the trail!:(

Like the old cowboys, the idea of being able to take advantage of loading both guns from your belt with the same cartridges, seem to make sense. Why carry two differnt types? Having a rifle in the scabbard on yer mount did you no good when you were in the saloon, or out on the trail with yer pants down....

Okey, I'm gettin carried away here with my reasons, but I just like the idea! Lots of times I take mine to the range & only have to take one type of ammo.

Let me also say the fun factor shooting these pistol cartridges in both types of guns trumps it all, for me anyway....

Let's not forget the options for .22 combos. I know this is a centerfire forum but if you're talking hand and carbine combos then the styles of guns metioned so far are also available in rimfire. For example Ruger 10/22 and MkIII or 22/45. Or a Henry lever rifle and Ruger Single Six. Or many others.

Although it's not here yet, how about the TNW Aero survival rifle in .45acp as a match for any 1911? This is assuming it's reliable and durable.

Rossi m92 in 454 Casull and any revolver that is chambered in it. I only say this because i got an M92 this past summer. She's really fun to shoot and i'm digging that chambering lately.

Also, JR carbine or Thureon defence carbine in 9mm to go with a glock 17. Sounds likes loads of fun. :)

.454 Casull or 45 colt as a runner up.

A handloaded .454 carbine will exceed factory 45-70 ballistics, and put down any game in NA, and a sturdy .454 revolver will handle full powered loads too. You can also download it to .45 colt cowboy levels ( 250 gr @ 800 fps ) or whatever else, if you just want to plink. Starline brass is sturdy and reasonably priced.

I couldn't agree more...

Here is a pic of my 454 Casull/45 Colt firearms.

I like a .44Mag revolver and a long gun...but having a .22LR pistol AND rifle is also a nice and cheap combo to have too!!!
