I have my norc stripped down for a gas cylinder replacement and noticed this.

NOTE How well the top of the hand guard clip slot aligns with the flat on the reciever.

Does anyone know if this is a reliable index indicator? I had my norc re-indexed last Nov, so I have nothing to compare with. Can anyone with a known index issue comment? Can anyone with a proper index comment?

No comments on this?

All that I'm looking for is a "Mine looks the same, and is good" or "Mine doesn't look like that, and is good" or "Mine doesn't look like that and I need to re-index".

I looked at a couple of mine, and I'd have to say that it would only be good for concluding the obvious. Its just too rough an indicator for saying its spot on, but it would tell you only if its way out.

It is not a indicator of index. The only way to accuratly index M14 barrels is to use Machinist levels and special fixtures the attach to the rear sight pocket [sight assy removed] on the receiver, and the front sight flat [front sight removed] on the muzzle brake/flash hider/fake flash hider that you are going to shoot the rifle with. All of the tools are available from Brownells and I highly recommend them if you are going to be installing/indexing M14 barrels.

Any other method is guess work and will likely result in excessive windage adjustment and/or function problems with a M14.
