Can a guru of barrel replacement explain this indexing thing? (in M1 context).
Is it shimming the threads on a barrel to orient the barrel @ tdc on the reciever? Not that I'm gonna do it, just curious what exactly it is...

When a barrel is installed with the proper amount of torque, the front sight should be top dead centre, headspace corrrect, etc. If the barrel shank is short, material can be removed from the shoulder until the barrel pulls up properly. If the barrel screws in slightly too far, the shoulder can be gently peined all the way around, to slightly shorten the shank. The barrel should then torque in properly. It the shank is much too long, a breeching ring or shim can be used. BUT headspace is also part of the equation. It is not enough to only have the barrel timed. Replacement barrels may be short shanked and short chambered to allow for final fitting. On a bolt action rifle it is often possible for the barrel to be set back one thread to allow timing or headspacing problems to be corrected. This can't be done on an M-1, because of the gas system. Headspace on issue replacement barrels was finalized using a pull reamer to finish the chamber. The barrel was installed in a properly timed manner, and then the reamer set was used. When the bolt drops to locked position behind the reamer, headspace is correct. If a barrel is used, having been on a different rifle previously, timing and headspace may or may not be correct.
Does this answer your questions?

Yes.
Sounds really involved, but kinda what I figured it was all about.
Who's the man for that kinda stuff (again, M1) and how spendy is an installation if I supply the barrel? Thanks!

Keep me posted! Didjya get it from the US? I just emailed Numrich and they said I need to go through all the import permits, wunnerin if it's worth the hassle...
