indian "baker" reproductions

Dolsen's Rifles, Kent Militia used the Baker Rifle during the War of 1812. The best Bakers are the Rifle Shoppe Bakers, but they are pricey and take forever to arrive. Indian made Baker rifles can have problems. With some, the breech is the weak point, the touch hole channel has a dog leg in it. Check with Military Heritage to see if they fixed this problem. MH muskets can have issues with fit and finish. I have purchased from Loyalist Arms and comparing the two, MH & LA, my buddy purchased from MH, LA has better fit and finish. A fellow I know in the US bought a MH Baker and fitted a Colerain rifled barrel for $170US and ended up with an inexpensive Baker Rifle.

I did some work on an Indian bess rifle and the breach plug ended a couple of threads short of where I thought it should end. I would suggest pulling the plug on the gun should you buy one and confirm that the plug is fitted all the way to the end of the threads. If not, it is not particularly difficult to make a new threaded portion on a lathe then silver solder the old tang back on so that the inletting still fits.

Ed Rayl in West Virginia 304-364-8269 makes Baker rifled barrels with breech plug and lugs for around $175, he is a nice guy, give him a call.

I just ordered a Baker rifle kit from the Rifle Shoppe and they are supposed to be currently in stock so I will post if on when it comes.Supposedly they have been cleaning up their act on the extreme delays so this will be a good test.Also my Baker will come with an assembled lock and with a barrel with breech plug and mounting lugs.

^^^ Great, I can't wait to see pics of your Baker. How much did it set you back, if you don't mind? What type of wood for the stock?

The price of the kit with the assembled lock and breeched barrle with lugs cost around $1200..Stock is of walnut.I ve ordered from the rifle shoppe before so if it does happen I have to wait awhile for it to arrive its not much of a problem as I have other projects to kep me going til then.

m1978 The French Voltigeurs used smoothbore carbines and muskets. A special mold is not required. Use .610 or .600 round ball, commonly called .62 cal. IIRC they used 100gr. of BP, I would start with 60gr and adjust from there.
