I really don’t know where I should post this.
I lived in India for a year back in 2011 and got into the shooting scene there and made a few friends. I meet a fellow at the range in Pune who was a former supply officer in the Indian army. We talked guns and he told me about the Indian ordnance Factory and their export sales. He gave me the name of Mr Jayantak, the Director of export and Marketing. I spoke to this fellow on the phone and he said that the INSAS could be purpose build in semi auto only for any client requesting. I also asked him about surplus Enfield Ishapore 2A/2A1 .308 rifles that might be available. I was told that most were put in storage once FN FAL production increased; the rest were given to local police stations throughout the country. At the time he told me that the southern state of kerala had about 20,000 2a/2a1’s that were going to be shipped back to the factory in Calcutta and would be available for bid. Interestingly he mentioned that the last time anyone had bought a quantity was Century back in 1989. Just sharing for anyone interested that deals in large imports and with the pockets deep enough.

Had one and I almost regret selling it. Would love to have a other one or two though as they are awesome little guns (and by little I mean they are little in comparison to the rifles I like to shoot).

From Wiki...

The INSAS is primarily based on the AKM but incorporates features from other rifles. It has a chrome-plated bore. The barrel has a six-groove rifling. The basic gas operated long stroke piston and the rotating bolt are similar to the AKM/AK-47.[5]

It has a manual gas regulator, similar to that of FN FAL, and a gas cutoff for launching grenades. The charging handle is on the left instead of on the bolt carrier, similar in operation to the HK33.[5] There is a change lever on the left side of the receiver above the pistol grip. It can fire a three-round burst or in semi-automatic mode. The cyclic rate averages at 650 rpm. The transparent plastic magazine was adapted from the Steyr AUG. The rear sight lies on one end of the breech cover and is calibrated to 400 meters. The furniture is either made for wood or polymer.[5] The polymer butt and forend assemblies differ from the AKM and are more similar to that of IMI Galil. Some variants have a folding butt. A bayonet can also be attached to it.[7] The guns take 20 or 30 round polymer magazines. The 30 round magazine is made for the LMG version, but can be also used in the rifle. The flash suppressor also accepts NATO-specification rifle grenades.[5]

From the FRT...

120563 Kalashnikov Insas, Indian Rifle Factory Ishapore (RFI), Rifle, Full Automatic, Numbered
143340 Kalashnikov Insas, Indian Small Arms Factory Kanpur, Rifle, Full Automatic, Numbered

Looking at the receiver, and the fact that the FRT already lists it as a Kalashnikov, it most likely will be prohibited as an AK variant even in semi auto.

LOL you better get someone really really experienced and really really trustworthy in dealing with indian export commerce before thinking about those enfields.
Business in India is about greasing the right wheels at the right time, otherwise you're in for a complete utter clusterfack bureaucratic red tape my friend, you need a master experienced greaser for that.

It is a piece of turd and hence India has been running a trial for one of the biggest upcoming small arms contract for a few years. A wholesale ditching of INSAS.

If they can get it done it will be either IWI ACE or Beretta ARX160.

You run business like this and the RCMP will crack down on you. Unfortunately, you can't do business in certain regions without a big tub of grease, but for some reason the Harper government decided to crack down on the practice.

I think it is more of a derivative of the FNC than anything.
Although given the RCMP forensic lab they have enough leeway to call it a derivative of near anything, FNC, AK etcetera,,,all of which are prohibited.
Although they have fallen in love with the 5.56mm round, the Indain Army despises the INSAS.

A very good look at parts and comparisons here. Delete space in the http.

Only real surprise is that the Indians produce their 5.56 round as a 64gr.
Curious about the consistancy and accuracy?

At first glance of the INSAS I thought it had a snowballs chance in hell of getting here.

But the idea of an Enfield in .308 Win is something I would like to jump at. While I don't particularly like the Enfield's appearance and feel I do respect its heritage here, (and in every Commonwealth country). The days of nice clean .303 Brit surplus ammo may be behind us but the flexibilty of .308 is undeniable.

It's only reliable when covered in pakitape.

I once went out for Indian food and then took a dump in a box.

It was more reliable than the INSAS.

Turd ......... pakitape

I must confess that I was unaware if it’s FRT status but the 2A1’s would be and interesting acquisition, with their brown “turd” colored stocks but I’m not sure that they would be wraped in “pakitape”! Yes, I am more than aware of the bureaucracy that plagues most developing and third world countries but I have one or two connected friends and with an interested investor I could probably grease the deal enough to slip some over; that is if they are not too turdy for some! Thank you to those who critiqued constructively.
