Hi, all;

Insofar as .22LR accuracy goes - I'm a reasonably experienced shooter (25 years plus) and I get out at least once a week to pull the trigger. However, I just can't seem to get the same gilt-edged accuracy with my rimfires that I do with my centrefire rifles.

I have several centrefire rifles that consistently put three bullets in under half an inch at 100 yards, and through the same hole at 50. (The indoor range I use is 50 yards.) I have tried a few bolt action rifles (I have a BRNO heavy barrel and a Marlin 25N) and scads of different types of ammo and while accuracy has been very good in some loads (ie: CCI Mini Mags shoot best out of both guns) I just can't get the same level of one-hole accuracy that I do out of my centrefires. :(

Am I doing something wrong? Is there any particular gun/ammo combination out there that would perhaps perform better. I was thinking of a Savage heavy barrel with the accu-trigger (I love the accu-trigger and have two Savage centrefires with that trigger).

Any suggestions?

CF is mor accurate than RF. If you want to improve on both then buy an air gun. Of course I am talking about absolute top of the line guns for all of the different types, and you better be prepared to pay $12 + a box for RF ammo as well!

Get yourself a few boxes of standard velocity ammo from Eley, Lapua or RWS. You will see a big improvment.

With your Brno, you should be able to get 5-shot groups averages around .4'' with standard velocity ammo and close to .3'' with match ammo. With the Marlin...I think you'll be lucky if you can get anything close to .5''

.... With the Brno, try standard velocity target loads, and shim the tip of the forend, so there's a little upward pressure. A simple business card slipped under the barrel will show if it helps or not ..... I've got a standard Brno E2, and the upward pressure made a world of difference ! .... David K.

A quality .22 should match a centre fire in accuracy up to about 100 yds......You must first try all the diff. ammo. you can find!! My Martini cadet is used out to 200 yds. with great accuracy(on a calm day) but only with a) Eley Tenex or b) Lapua Club with c) Fed. Gold Medal close behind.......most other brands wouldn't stay on the paper at 200!! Your gun will differ but you will find some brands that will tighten your groups right up.

Try a .17

I was at the range today wiping the floors with the centerfire guys. The 17 is a true test of your marksmanship at 100 yards.

I have the Marlin but it needs a trigger job - once done I am certain I can put 3 shots through a nickel at 100 yards.

On .22 Rimfire I have opted out of the hypervelocity-- federal class seems to be the all round economical performer for me.

I have 2 Remington 541's, one is an "S", the other a "T" sporter. Both have match chambers and reworked triggers. They will shoot in the .2's and .3's at 50, and well under an inch at 100 with ammo they like. [quality match ammo]. There is no reason why you should be giving up much out to 100 yards with your rimfire rifle if it is a top quality one and you are using the proper ammo. As has been mentioned, consistency is the important thing.

Regards, Eagleye.
