Indoor Chrony Trick

A fellow brought his brand new Chrony to the inoor pistol range yesterday. He had a pair of those little multi LED flashlites (the $3.00 ones) to supply overhead light.

He just balanced a light on top of each diffuser, directly over the skyscreen. I was skeptical, but it worked like a charm.

I bought a Chrony for indoor work and used some Super Glue to hold the flashlights in place.

Here is what it looks like. The red tap is an aiming mark. I aim about 2" below the tab.

Use tape to hold the flashlights to the diffusers.

You'll be happier when it comes time to take it apart...

It's a problem with the refresh rate of the lights (more fluorescents than incandecents).

I have the Chrony light set for the unit, but not all ranges have good power facilities to plug them in. The little flash lites are a simple alternative.

I always get a bad reading or two when shooting outside. One of these times I will put it in a box and use flashlights.. maybe that is a fix...

Dollarama have a 1$ alternative, I mounted some of these in my safe, will buy more for this chrony trick so my chrony can stop reading at which speed the fluorescents are oscilliating

I made a couple of lights using IR modules for security cameras, got them real cheap from dealextreme. We tried these last night, and they didn't work. I probably should have put them above diffusers, not below.

Anyway, a smart friend brought a set of 1500W halogens. But I like the flashlight idea better, thanks for the tip!

It looked to me that you extended the rods holding up the diffuser. I assume its to make more room for the bullet to pass through so you don't hit the rods and bust up the chrony.
Instead of using those rods I use plastic straws from the dollar store. If you hit one it has zero effect on the chrony itself, just replace the straw. I have seen pictures of chrony's theat have had a bullet hit the rod and really messed up the rod pockets.

Update: Sometimes I got an error message when turning on the lights. Chrony siad that is becasue light is too bright. This was fixed by taping a piece of white paper underneath the plastic difuser. It was taped so that the paper is curved on the bottom to get it moved away from the plastic by a quarter inch or so. This reduces the lght, gives a bigger 'sweet spot" and makes the error message go away.

I got a pair of Sylvania dot-it lights from Rona that have an adjustable brightness feature.
