Inexpensive 22 for new firearm owner?

I bought my Wife am Scorpio EM332A for completing her Hunters Safety.

She really likes it. Nice little shooter.

The Savage MK11 is also a great choice.

Look through EE, there is a 10/22 in synthetic stock for $360

Considering I've seen those for $280-300+tax at retailers in recent weeks, that's full retail plus the tax.

Hard to go wrong with a Savage mk ii, it was my first gun almost a decade ago and I'll probably never sell it. I've since bought one of the heavy barrel stainless models with a Boyd's stock, but I haven't actually gotten to shoot it yet due to moving.

I also have a marlin 795, it's a great little semi plinker, they're not made anymore but they're still cheap on the EE (I've seen em for $200-250 recently). They have a last round bolt hold open, which is a big deal in a semi 22lr IMO. They also have 25rd magazines available. Those two features make it one of the best budget 22s on the market IMO.

I wouldn't get a cooey bolt action. Having to pull the cocking piece each time gets old real quick for me. They're a cool piece of Canadiana, I have one of the single shot bolt actions, but it's more of a novelty than anything else. Nothing WRONG with a cooey per say, but there's better options for most people especially because they are not nearly as cheap as they used to be - not too many years ago $100 would get you all sorts of cooeys, now that only gets you a beat up single shot missing a trigger guard.

Less than 200$ Scorpio EM332A is much solid than Savage MK2. It has a bolt action like Anschutz 54 and Walther KKM. The bolt is very easy to disassemble and have a strong fire pin which can remove the front part to dry fire the gun. The accuracy is only a little better than factory 10/22 because the barrel is not good.

Mine had a great barrel; 20 yards, one ragged hole from a bench-rest. As good as any; better than most.

Good ol cooey will do the budget good

I would say get a repeater. Because you can make a repeater a single shot, but cannot make a single shot a repeater. They might get bored having to manually load, close the bolt, and then #### back the striker.

I love my Cooey, but I don't shoot long sessions with it. As after 25 rounds, my thumb is tired from catching it on the Cooey extractor.

Savage mark 2 with a heavy barrel is a very accurate gun for very cheap.. it was the most shot gun in Canadian 'rimfire' 'Precision rifle series' before the base rifle price was raised. Lots of people even shoot them tuned up in 'open class' against $2-3K rifles.

Gonna throw another vote in for a single shot Cooey of some sort. Or, since they're available. A TOZ single shot would be fantastic.

Keeps your shooting slow and deliberate, you dont have to worry about stopping to reload magazines and they're generally accurate as can be.

A good Cooey 75 would be good choice, mine have been beyond accurate and the sights are pretty decent. The TOZ8M much in the same vain, just one less step to shooting since it cocks on close. Cooeys can be found on the low end of $150 and still get a decent shooter, TOZ8m's are a bit more in the $400+ area, but well worth every penny!

The Scorpio is impossible to beat for the price. 5 minutes of futerring and you have a precision rifle with a 20oz trigger.
But if it's just for fun, any of the many semi 22's on the market will be a pleaser.
Just buy lots of ammo. It's never going to be cheaper.
