Inexpensive 223 ammo for coyote

Hi can anyone tell me what kind and where I can find some inexpensive ammo I can use for coyote hunting using my new stevens 223 .... I was in lebaron today and they said it is illegal for me to use the full metal jackets for hunting/$9 box....that I would have to use $17 a box ammo for hunting....Is this correct?

Try the Winchester 'USA' .223 HP 40 round bulk pack. Its probably about the cheapest non-FMJ .223 ammo. I can buy them locally at Wal-mart.
 
Not to be rude, but if you can't afford a $17.00 box of ammo, you can't afford to go hunting.

Unless, of course, you have 20 coyotes running around your living room.....

Our local walmart does not sell them... If anyone knows of one around the GTA/Kitchener Waterloo area....

Even a mailorder place would be great.... thanks

One of the main reasons I bought a 223 was because the ammo according to the posts I read here on CCN said it was the least expensive to shoot.... Now that I got one and find hunting ammo around the same price as 22-50 or 270 it gets me a little pissed off....

I thought I could practice with the same round I hunt with... excuse my ignorance or your lack of ____________ (you fill in the blank)

Back to the point, is there an inexpensie 223 ammo available for huntig coyote's.... and if so where might I be able to purchase it....

If there is not such inexpensive ammo, I may turn to reloading, just trying to get all the facts..thank you

Practice with the cheap fmj's, adjust your scope for the good stuff and go hunting. There is no 22-250 fmj ammo to practice with, 270 is too big for coyotes if you want to keep the pelts, and once more, if the $8.00 difference between fmjs and hunting ammo has thrown your life into a tizzy, well than perhaps you can't afford to go hunting. :)

Have you tried Canadian Tire? LeBaron's or Bass Pro. I see Bass Pro has 50 gr Remington UMC .223 for $22.99 for 40 rounds. I am sure there are better deals out there but if you want cheaper than that you will have to reload.
 
Can you not hunt varmints (coyotes) with FMJ? Here you can. If so, there are plenty of sources of 223 55gr FMJ ammo for $10 a box.
 
I shoot em with FMJ, Maybe you can't legally in Ontario. Check your regs, I bet you can. $17 dollars a box is still pretty cheap for ammo, you have to remember EVERYTHING is going up. As far as I know $17 is still cheaper than 22-250 and .204 so..........
 
Does anyone know if its legal or illegal in ontario to use FMJ for hunting in Ontario.. I have been checking the regs but can't find anything...
 
Reload? Customize your loads for coyotes, save money and shoot way more! .223 is cheap to shoot when your like me and buy things in bulk, 16lbs powder at a time, 7K bullets. Stock up and save, and learn a great new hobby.....reloading!

I am not sure if it is illegal or just unethical...the reason why I think u can't hunt with FMJ is that there is no or very little expansion on impact and there is a chance it will just go right through with out hitting any vitals...when u hunt you want something that will expand quickly so you utilize more kinetic energy per inch on impact and in turn will drop them faster because the shock would be that much more traumatic...well hopefully it helps have a good one

For big game this is true. For small game and fur bearing animals, FMJs cause less pelt damage. Check your provincial regs. Many allow FMJs for coyotes.
 
Many people use fmj for coyotes to minimize expansion and pelt damage. I don't think anyone would consider FMJ on coyotes to be unethical, so long as your shot placement is good. If you're shooting for pelts, you're gonna take the time to make your best shot possible.
 
You may want to try reloading... you can shoot some seriously good loads for like... .25 cents a round or less... might be worth checking out if you have some extra time on you hands!
 
Any of the bullets that I have forsale will do the trick on coyotes when you reload them you will save %50 over anything you can buy in the store...

Soft point, V-max, Holopoint, Match A-max will all do the trick, alot of the match bullet have simmilar properties to FMJ with low expansion

If your in southern ontario I would be happy to come and blast them for you.:dancingbanana::sniper:
 
I have seen the winchester white box hp ammo for I think it was like 17-19 bucks for 40 rds not quite as cheap as fmj but pretty darn close. It was the economy pack -- I personally don't buy factory ammo except for a few calibers as I reload. It is cheaper then factory and I can build better rounds for the cost of FMJ (i.e. VMAX bullets as opposed to plain HP or FMJ)
