older Marlin and Mossbergs are as accurate as the new stuff is suppose to be. I never have bought "new" and have seldom been disappointed. I shoot my 1940s Marlin 81 out to over 200 yards. not bad for a 70 year old gun. And they can be bought for under $200.
Older Remingtons have also earned a place in my safe too (34, 511P). Can be had for about 200 if you're quick. If Canadian made is your thing, you could watch for NAACOs as well.
I have a 1956 Cooey (I know the year, coz it was my xxth birthday present...), but I also have a new Mossberg 702, Savage Mark II and A Marlin XTM, and the new ones - none of 'em much over $200 - shoot just as well as the old one.
