I'm in the market for a new rifle for this years hunting season, but I don't have a bunch of money to invest in it. I was considering the Savage Edg XP Camo kit in .270, but am open to suggestions. I'm planning on hunting mainly mulie and white tail, with the odd black bear, moose and maybe an occasional elk.

Savage package deal. Any dealer that sells Savage or Stevens will offer them and savings are decent. Then again you get what you pay for too but you might luck out.

The savage packs are probably the best budget combo around. But plan on upgrading your scope in the future if you go the combo route, better off to just buy the rifle and a decent scope (bushnell 3200 as suggested above will last you a lifetime, great scopes. Or maybe a leupold rifleman, basspro sells them for $219 as well).

Whatever you do, avoid the remington 770/710 packages at all cost.

Don't discount a used scoped rifle when money is short. Takes a great deal of abuse to damage a modern commericial hunting rifle. Not the best time of year for 'em in gun shops though. Gun show or the EE maybe.

I know a fellow who got a B&C mule deer with a Savage package 300WN. Plastic stock, el cheapo scope and cheesy sling, but he can shoot very well and the rifle did the job.

There's another thread about those Edges....down a few from this one. Some good info there. I'll second the motion for the Stevens 200 and the Elite 3200. That's a Great combo, accurate little gun..mines a 243!

you could always pick up a sporter enfield for less than $150 and then spend the rest of your budget on a nice scope

Good choice. Personally I wouldn't bother with camo and just get the black version.

.270 is a great cartridge for what you plan to hunt. Lot's of variety, relatively inexpensive, and most everyone stocks it.

My wife bought a Savage combo in .243 last year. To the door for less than $500. It shoots great and she is not experienced enough to think that her scope is crap. It works for her. She took a doe early season last year with an SKS, then, knowing she could actually shoot a deer, she went and bought the Savage. This thing shoots great!! She got it second week of season, I took it to the range, found out the bullet it likes (Federal 100gr), she zeroed it and shot a box through it the next day. She took an 8-point (eastern points) buck with it that was 180 lbs on the hook without skin and head two days later. 182yds. Through and through lung shot, he went 25yds.

Do NOT underestimate these rifles, hers shoots 3/8" at 100 yds

I went and had a feel of the edge, but went with the 111fcxp3 package (in .270).
Main reason was that the edge seems to be designed for people with small hands.
I do not have small hands, and it felt like I was holding a toy.

That Remington 700 in 7mm mag with 3x9x40 Bushnell at Del Selins will shoot. it was my cousins, under 1" 3 shots @ 100 yrd with a handload capped with a 160 partition and a full dose of IMR 7828, its the black one in the link Amphibious gave you.
We hunt together and he traded it in on a Tikka T3 Lite SS in 30/06 same as mine. We shoot the same load so we will always have ammo if by chance someone loses or forgets it, God forbid.
