At long last this gem has fallen into my clutches. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about it, wikipedia has for once been the most informative source I've found. Hopefully you guys can do better ;)
Any help in deciphering the unit markings on the butt-plate would be very much appreciated, there seems to be at least three different ways people are reading these...
The bore is mint and I'm hoping to keep it that way using a smokeless load. I read that trapdoor 45/70 load data is appropriate for this action, is that the case? I've got Lee dies, a 340gr Lyman mold and Bertram brass for it.
This rifle also seems to have had the bayonet lug ground off at some point, is this a known original modification?


I'm also not 100% sure what a rifle like this is worth, I've always seen them in much much worse condition locally. It's Spandau made with every single little number matching on this thing.

Wow thats a nice one. And yeah 45/70 trapdoor data for it. And with the 10% bigger case you will always be lower pressure
If you go on hodgdon reloading they will have lots of data under trapdoor 45/70.
I like h4895 and imr 3031 and bullets from 350gr to 425gr. Rustywood has brass for it and lee makes dies.

The Germans went from a round nose bullet for the single shot 1871 Mauser to a flat nose bullet for the tubular magazine 71/84.

Single loading it does not matter, but if your using the magazine a flat nose bullet is best.

The old Dominion .43 Mauser ammunition had a flat nose bullet.

Lyman makes a mold for the 71/84

RCBS makes the best mold, very close to the original with 390grs flat nose bullet.

here are my loads:
Unique 13grs 390grs bullet sized to .446 1 sheet T.P.
IMR 4198 29grs 390grs bullet sized to .446 1 sheet T.P.
Hercules 2400 20grs 390grs bullet sized to .446 1 sheet T.P.
ALL LOADS AT YOUR OWN RISK

These loads shoot very well in all my 71/84 Mausers

The bayonet lug, and/or the stacking rod were often ground of in an attempt to demilitarize the weapon.

- stamps on my buttplate are 7.R. over 11.201.
