Been offered a JP Sauer drilling in 16x16x8 and looking for info on the 8mm chambering.

Seller says it's 8mm. I'm assuming it's 8x57r as I haven't found any jp sauers in 8x56r hungarian... Sound about right?

What kind of issues are there going to be aquiring brass for it? I understand it's hard to get/pricey, and haven't seen any dies for it.

Also, there seem to be confusion between two different forms of 8x57r ammo (8x57R vs 8x57R-360vs?). One being .318 and one being .323 . I know there is a time period associated with each diameter, but am not sure further than that. I'm going to go inspect the gun, but any info I have beforehand would help me make my decision.

I See here (http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=217836&highlight=drilling+sauer) that 8x57r can be made from 444 marlin ammo run through a 7.92x57 die set. This sound correct?

I also see that there are some sorts of issues with rim thickness. Anyone have a comment?

I'd check further on cartridge before committing to this as Sauer had many of it's own 8mm chamberings including 8x72, 8x48, 8x58,etc. If indeed it is 8x57(and not 360) you may have to slug bore to determine "J" or "S" dimensions as the change over was done in 1905 or so. I'd ask to slug bore and do a chamber cast before laying down the big bucks that some of these drillings command. Obscure gauges(like 16) and cals. reduce value in some cases more then 50%...IMHO....Ben

There are two 8 x 57 R's too.
"...time period associated with each diameter..." The .323" bullet came along around 1905. Got a year of manufacture?

.318 barrels for sporting rifles were made long after the .323 was adopted in 1905 for military use.
Have a good look at the proof marks. Bore diameter may be stamped on the barrel.

Guys make 7x57R out of .303 brit so why not 8x57R. It could be like was said .318 J bore or .323 S bore. Regular .308 or .303 bullets can be rolled with a bastard file on a hard surface to rough up the jacket and paper patched to the correct size if bullet availability is a problem? Harold
