Well, since my Rpal is issued and I have been checking out the EE I thought it was time to get the scoop on buying guns privately.

Here's what I gather from my reading...

As the Buyer, I give the seller my personal info and my pal number.

The seller starts the transfer and gets a confirmation number then ships the gun to me and gives me the confirmation number

When I get the gun, I call the cfc, give them the confirmation number and complete the transfer.

Seems pretty easy as I understand it but I have a couple questions...

What personal info does the seller require to start the transfer? Name, address, phone # date of birth and city of birth?

When the transfer is completed over the phone am I able to take the new gun to the range right away or do I have to wait for the registration card in the mail before I can go to the range?

Thanks

The transfer needs to be complete before the gun is shipped...

As soon as you get the transfer number you should call in. I would not ship a gun if the transfer has not been completed.

Personal Info: Name, Address and Pal# is all that is required. phone number is also nice to give as well

For non-restricted I would personnaly be fine going to the range without the certificate. Restricted, I would wait and you will need an ATT.

The above info is all good.

The only thing you need to give the seller is your name and RPAL number, but obviously an address as well if the gun is to be shipped.

From the seller you only need the reference number and name, though I think I have done tranfers without even having the seller's name.

Once the sellers gets confirmation of the transfer being complete he will ship you your gun. Non-restricted transfers are typically completed right away and could be shipped promptly, but restricteds have to be approved. This can take anywhere from a few days to a number of weeks.

I personally have never waited for a reg cert to arrive before taking a new gun out, and my LTATT covers any restricteds in my name.

However You should probably get the sellers phone number external email and other contact info.. in case you need to contact them

both buyers and sellers should give their full names, addresses and phone numbers it saves a world of problems . Communication is the key to a good deal ,as well as a good product...

Thanks guys,

I should have mentioned that I am looking at NON Restricted guns right now. The restricted will come next month when I renew my range membership and join a pistol club. No ATT is required yet :)

Thanks for clearing things up. It makes more sence that the transfer is completed before the gun is shipped.

If I call in and can get my Rpal number over the phone, can I start the buying and transfers without the card in hand and have the NON Restricteds shipped?

I assume yes and if any guns arrive before the card lock the guns up untill the card arrives?

Cactus,

You should also ask for the serial number as the buyer as well as the sellers Rpal number for your records.

If you are purchasing from a Dealer out of town and they have to ship it to you, sometimes they will ask you for a place of birth to verify that it is actual you they are selling and shipping the firearm to. You DO NOT need to give this to a private seller.

Hi there,
I often see at garage sales the odd .22 or something bigger, the seller just wants rid of the rifles, these aren't registered and I've heard sellers saying it belonged to my dead husband who passed away 20 odd yrs ago etc,can I buy one and just register it ? What if it was registered and the 'owner' has passed away ? There are some good buys out there, particulary at farm auctions.
