Greetings Is there anyone who can identify this gun maker ? Here are close up shots . The proof marks are English on the bottom of the barrel. It is a very old single barrel cap lock rifle.

Make a rubbing of it , it will be much easier to read . . Lay a piece of paper over the writing and rub a lead pencil over it edge wise . The writing will come up darker

Stapenhill? Count Stapenhill?

Try rubbing a bit of white chalk into the lettering. It might pop out a bit more

Perhaps an image less close-up? Is there anything on the top of the barrel, like a location name? That might help narrow the search.

There is nothing on the top of the barrel but under the Stapenhill ? there is _ _ _ _on TRENT

I think it may be the gun owners name as Stapenhill is a small village located either close to or in Burton On Trent. First word looks like Count

Actually a rubbing with a 5 inch 12 amp angle grinder will really help us all out. Remember to use all your body weight when making the rubbing with the grinder.
