Hello everyone I have a opportunity to buy a 1980 colt A2 ar15 with triangle Forend full stock ,20" barrel & from what I could tell it's not a heavy barrel, also there is no forward assist. It is in brand new condition, I mean wow clean with orig mag pined to 5. I'm very Interested in buying it but not sure what it's value is & are the 1980 a collectible piece. Any help of what it should be worth is much appriciated or what to look for, also this baby has only had a box of shells through it (20 rounds)

Thanks canserb

Do you have pics? A Colt "A2" from 1980 doesn't sound right, as I believe that the military version (M16-A2) wasn't formally adopted until 1983-ish. Civilian models would most definately have come out well after this date. Your description is that of a Colt Sporter A1 or Colt Sporter AR-15. The A2's should have round handgaurds, a heavier barrel after the gas block and what I call "dial up" windage and elevation sight adjustments on the rear sight.

If your lower reciever says "colt sporter A2" (or something to that effect, than someone (it would seem) has mixed your A2 lower with an older A1 upper. Although I hate to be the bearer of bad news, I hope this helps you.

Dr Van Nostran's post #5 pretty well tells all you want to know...

Colt ceased production of the Colt AR15 Sporter, or "SP1" in 1984. Colt introduced the AR15A2 in in 1985.

Many early A2 Colts will have SP1 lower and upper receivers, ie: no mag fence, no forward assist and A1 field sights.

SP1's had the 1 in 12 twist "pencil" barrel, the light barrel of the M16A1.

AR15A2's got the 1 in 7 twist HBAR or the government profile "half heavy", barrel light under the hand guards, heavy from the front site forward barrel of the M16A2.

If the barrel is stamped C MP 1 in 7 5.56 NATO, it's an A2.

Slab side lower A1, mag fence re inforcements A2.

An early Colt AR15A2 will be roll marked "Sporter II" or "Government Model".

The SP1 is roll marked "Colt AR15 Sporter".

20" AR15's have kind of fallen out of favor a bit, undeservedly so. $900 to $1100 depending on the gun and the motivation of the seller I'd say.
