I recently picked up a rem 700 BDL SS 338wm and have a 3 questions about it.
from the rem web site I see the bdl ss was produced from 93 to 04

1-from the barrel stamp XO I get that it is a dec 94 production date?

2- the barrel is 22", is this factory? I suspect it was originally 24"..

3- the stock is an HS precision, is this factory or a later upgrade?
thanks

I am guessing originally 24". I know the first generation xcr's were 24" in the 338wm but have now gone to 26" in the current model

so what can I expect with the shorter barrel? crazy muzzle blast? more kick?
I am going to try and get to the range next week and see how it shoots

Recoil and muzzle blast should not be noticeably different than a 24" barrel.
I used a 22" 338 for years and really liked it, another gun in the ' shoulda never got ridda ' category.
Also there will be very little velocity difference and the nice part is you have 2" less barrel to snag on things when you are in the bush, I'd take it and be very happy...

I think you can expect improved handling characteristics with the shorter bbl. Sounds perfect as is.

X2- Shorter stiffer barrel may be better to handle also may shoot better!
Nice rig and a great calaber. I like it! Enjoy it and let us know how it shoots.

finally got to the range today, I was shooting cheap win power point 200gr , after zeroing the rifle I took 4 final shots on a fresh target( yes there is actually 4 shots in the pic) I am happy enough with the accuracy, I am sure the rifle is capable of more.

Firing one at a time makes the kick less noticable. 4 in a row increases the "felt recoil factor".

That is still a MOM or a MOD or a MOB - Minute of Moose, Deer and Bear.

Those are 200 grain bullets so what do you anticipate using when handloading.
With the 250 grain Nosler partitions, 69 grains of IMR 4831 produced 4", and by 72 grains the group shrunk to 2" at 200 yards.
Velocity was above the book published figure of 2700 by 50.

I did get dies with the gun but I am not sure I will be loading any time soon. I just picked up 5 1/2 boxes of premium 225gr for it from another gunnut who is getting out of 338.There were 2 boxes or Hornady 225gr that list mv at just over 2900fps on the box. yikes. I am going to try those next.
