I am a brand new member of this forum and I already have a question. I am in the market for a 1 1/2" to 2 1/2" group at 50 yds 45 ACP for the 2700 match. Do any of you guys own such a gun? and how do you like it?

Hello RBR,

Did you mean 2008 match?

I can really recommend any LB. For reliability, price and precision, Bears are hard to beat! I don't have a bullseye wadcutter but I have cyber friends that do...they are tack drivers, if Les tells you that it will group 1 1/2"........it will (often less)! but you have to do your part:)!!!!!!For a carry/defense gun I would not recommend the 1 1/2" package, but for a competition/range gun, yes. Be prepared to have a very tight barrel/bushing/slide fit!
I prefer combat/tactical guns...here is my 2 1/2'' LB

No, I'm sure he's referring to the "NRA 2700" target match. You shoot 90 rnds w/ a .22, 90 rnds w/ a "centrefire" and then 90 rnds w/ specifically a .45. The first 30 rnds in each is done at 50 yds. Very challenging.

If you've got the bucks to spare (And actually, it's probably no more expensive than a Les Bauer...) then Pardini makes a great .45. I know a fellow competitor who has one and I can't believe how accurate it shoots. Almost, or as, good is the much cheaper CZ 97. The drawbacks to those 2 are that I'm not sure you have good scope mounting options, if you want to go that route. A good Para-Ordnance should also be an adequate grouper. The Geezers swear by their tricked out Colts, that they bought back in the 60 or 70's. Myself? Enh, I just toodle along with my mostly stock Norinco. Yeah, I don't finish well, but I figure I'm still finishing better than the folks who don't have a .45 at all, and only shoot the 900 or 1800 match. Gotta be init to winit!

Thanks Pyroman, I stand corrected...I read too fast 2007! That match sounds very challenging

I can't comment on the Pardini but the Bear is guarenteed to shoot 1 1/2" at 50 yards!

Eventhough I wouldn't buy a Norinco, I know a fellow that changed the barrel for a Kart in his and the groupings are quite impressive!
:)

okcorral1881: Yes I am referring to the NRA 2700 course. My previous 45ACP would only group between 5 and 7" @ 50 Yds from a Ransom Rest. I want an accurate gun as well a reliable one since the only time it will be used is on the range for practice or competition. 92FS Inox: Thanks for the info. That is the dealer/importer who I had in mind if I go this route. Pyroman: You are right on the money with your statement. I'll have to check out those other lines. I probably won't get the optical mount as all the shooting I have done in the past has been with open sights. I have shot the 45 match with my 32 S&W Long but don't care for the 10% penalty of your total score at the end. I finally bought a 45 so I could shoot the match without the point deduction, however just don't have the confidence in a gun that can't group under at least 2" @ 50 yds along with a 7-8 Lb. trigger pull with 1/4 mile of creep!! Thanks to all for the input, I would still like to hear from someone that has the Les Baer Bullseye Wadcutter version with either the 5 or 6" barrel with or without the optical.

Hello RBR,

First thing, thanks for acknowledging, (I simply hate it when they don't!)...

I doubt that many Canadians own a Baer Bullseye Wadcutter. You could always ask Gabriel (Ronin Sport) if he's sold any or if he has first hand experience with that gun. Brenda at Les Baer's could give you some extra infos too or if you want I could hook you up with Crazy John...one of the biggest's US distributors for LB.
PS Special custom orders will take +- 4 months.
Check your PM!
OK

OK okcorral1881, no problem. I plan on phoning Ronin Sports in the next day or 2 re: this issue. I already e-mailed Barbara @ Les Baer's a couple of weeks ago and the ETA runs about 12 to 16 weeks. I don't mind the wait for a quality firearm and in all honesty having to import into Canada it would likely end up another 4 weeks on top of the 16 weeks! Thanks again for the private message, RBR.

okcorral1881: Have not handled or even seen a Baer in person yet. Did shoot a Clark (I think) and ended up winning the match with it. That was the last time it was offered to me for a match!! From friendly Manitoba, Canada.

Well I know Ronin has some stock :)

But a LB is not the only pistol that can achieve what you are looking for...

Any well built 1911 will fit the bill.. Or better yet have one built up for you,, you can order a frame and slide from LB, Wilson or RR, even a Caspian , get a good smith and your in business.

While I love LB's there are alot of good 1911's that can be bought that have the accuracy your looking for..

Wilson, STI's, Kimbers, Springfield Operators all have good accuracy, hell my old Colt can do the job (ok so its been accurized) but thats the point.. Today any 1911 can be made into a tack driver given the proper attention and smithing. Often alot cheaper than an LB.

Getting to know what ammo works best for you, can make the difference.

TightGroup: Thanks for your input. I considered getting my Gold Cup reworked, however once I figured out the costs of getting it to shoot under 2" groups versus selling the Colt as is and starting from the ground up it seemed like a better way to go. I just like the idea of purchasing a gun that has been built from scratch, accuracy/functioned tested along with the proof target before it even leaves the factory. Not to mention shipping costs both ways, permits and paper work involved both ways and on and on and on to accurize a currently owned gun!!!

I just read a great article in Guns & Ammo about the STI Spartan.

Its a no frills, no option 1911, but it shoots .8" and at the retail of 600 its a steal. Though you might want to change a few little things here and there..

Ohh and if you are selling the Colt maybe I could interest you in a nice Trade a Almost NIB Kimber TLEII

In any case there are alot of good 1911 out there ..

And oh the LB I believe you still have to send it back to LB for warranty work or else if someone else works on it the warranty is void. I do not know if Ronin is authorized to work on the pistols as of yet..

Hope this helps a bit

TightGroup: A 0.8" group is exceptional if it's 5 shot groups @ 50 Yds. I sold my gun 3 weeks ago at a gun show otherwise that may have been an avenue to take. It is a tough choice to make as there are many capable gunmakers/pistolsmith's out there! The warranty repair thing is something that I never had given any thought to, although I would hope that would be far and few in between cases. All of the info I have received helps, as no one knows better than us guys that are doing this in person. Pyroman: Here is a link to the club that usually hosts the 2700 @ the Labour Day Shoot. http://www.mts.net/~wrpa/index.html

That looks like a great club in the pictures. I can only see postings for competitions in 2002 though... Man, this time of the year sucks for 2700 matches...

That's sweet, RBR. Is the sample group at 50 yards? If so, you know you will only have yourself to blame for any shot that isn't a 10! :D But that's the way it should be. Enjoy!
