I traded for a savage 25-06 recently. I have read up on the caliber but the internet has many opinions on the best ammo to use for this caliber. I would be using it for deer mostly. Thank you for the info.

I shoot 75gr vmax out of it for coyotes and 120pointed soft points for deer. Both are decently accurate.
My savage is just an axis so it’s not top shelf by any stretch. A great do all caliber

The plus is speed over many of the other quarter bores. The weakness is 120gr maximum projectile size. The .257 has not had the attention to new projectile development of say .224 or .264.

One of the bonus is that when one of these "caliber for recoil sensitive" threads come up.....no-one seems to mention 25-06. Definitely extends ethical range over a 243 win. At short range.....with good shot placement .....works for Moose. Would I have a child or wife hunt alone with a G-bear about ....NFW. But a nice bridge to full bore calibers.

True enough. It does have its limitations. Why I decided on getting mine was after seeing the accuracy my Daughter and Son In Law were getting out of a pair of Savages they had, in 22-250. For a fairly 'inexpensive' rifle, anything they put through theirs shot VERY well! Factory ammo or reloads. Anyway, I decided to go for one but I was leaning towards a calibre that would reach out a little further, something like a 243 or, 25-06. As luck would have it, Pud at Bashaw Sports just happened to have one in 25-06, which I made arrangements for. In addition, I did put decent glass on it, a Leupold VX-III, 6.5x20 Long Range with Varmint reticle.:d No complaints.

Try some 100gr Barnes TSX bullets. I have dropped 2 moose quickly with that bullet. Deer may not need as tough a bullet though. A 117gr Hornady interlock should be a good option to dump all the bullet energy in the deer. A TSX will most likely pass through with not much energy released. It likes tough bone and hair to open up and do its best work

I haven't hunted deer since 1996 but for several years I used a Winchester mode 70 chambered in 25-06. I believe all I ever used back then were Winchester 100 gr silver tip expanding. I took a deer every year and none went more than 50 yards. Most dropped on the spot or darn close to it. Wish I could still shoot like that cause I still have the rifle, lol!

I shot a bunch of deer in the past with 117gr BT SP IL bullets out of my old Rem 700. I quit deer hunting for a few years and sold the 700. Now that the kids are old enough and showing interest in the sport I set up a 243 for my daughter and both my boy and me will be shooting 25-06s but in an AI version. My son however will be shooting the 117gr bullets in his and only shooting standard loads for this year. I do have a few different bullets to try in mine but will wait until it warms up and I get a few sessions in on the bench before I pick a bullet for this fall.
I did take my 700 out to the gopher patch a time or two but found the 75gr Vmax was just a bit over kill. There were pieces left to confirm a hit but they were scattered along ways.

I have used the 25-06 to shoot deer, moose, elk, bears, and various small game.

For all of those animals I used 120 grain nosler Partitions. This bullet penetrated awesome and killed very effectively.

Federal Fusion made good ammo for the money, I would be tempted to try a box of this first in my rifle if I was shooting factory ammunition. After . Fusion thing can get pricey in factory choices. The only Sav. Axis rifle I ever shot was an excellent shooting rifle, good luck with yours.....FS

Thank you all for the great info. I will try and get to cabelas soon and see what they have in this caliber. Also some shows coming up soon . Thank you
