I know absolutely nothing about anything to do with these rifles. Nothing. Not even sure if this is in the correct forum.

A friend picked up this rifle recently and is wondering about info on it... mainly caliber/cartridge.

From what I can find online it is a model 1905 and I believe it to be a 9x56MS cartridge. Any info would be appreciated specially in trying to find a round to fire in it.

Yes, it is a Mannlicher-Schoenaur carbine. Ammo is unobtanium. Quality cartridge makes 8x56 M-S brass that you may be able to neck up. The 9mm bullets are also very difficult to find. Hawk makes them and that is about it.

Ohhhhhhh............!!!!!! That is VERY nice (insert "green with envy" emoticon here). No idea about 9x56 components, but others will hopefully have leads.

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like he may have a hard time using this one

Well, it may just take a little time to find the necessary components. Factory ammo wlil likely be unobanium" but if he's willing to handload, he shold be OK. He can order dies from CH4D in Ohio, will export to Canada. I don't have my Cartridges of the World handy at the moment but I think he could form cases from 8x57. :)

Rim diameter of M-S is .468" and on 8x57 is .473" - could work I guess.

This sounds like A LOT of work... tell your friend my offer is limited time only. Can't be this generous forever! :yingyang:

For the OP:
There are some posts on the Gunboards forum on this. Search result brought up this list. A few links from there:

The last link above (Post #30) has some info on reloading:

...I made my ammo by fire forming 8MM Mauser ammo. (.323 bullet not likely to contact .356 barrel on the way out) and I was good to go. I got some Kynoch ammo with rifle but did not shoot it. I used 358 Winchester load dope for it and figured out 250 gr. bullets worked for the factory rear sight leafs just fine.

The fired cases come out very nicely with no swell on base. If you have good brass you can load it over and over an over till the primer pocket gets loose. After fireforming the 8MM Mauser ammo I stress relieved the neck/shoulder area...

I found the buffalo arms site last night. Also discovered that RCBS makes a set of dies (special order) and a set of forming dies (special order) to form from 30-06 brass so there are some options for him. Just depends on if he wants to use it enough to spend the $$ on the dies.

Also read that the original bullets for that cartridge were 0.356" and current 35 cal bullets are 0.358" and serveral referrences state that the 0.002" has very little increase in pressure but to make sure to start on the very low end.

I've passed on what I've found out and everything is waiting on him now. Thanks for all the info and links!
