From what I have read all over this page it seems the general belief is that the gremlin is caused by the bolt carrier failing to disconnect the trigger. Until today that was my understanding. Wrong, the carriers seem to disconnect trigger every time. The problem is caused by the striker re-connecting trigger, by forcing the sear down too far during its rearward travel. The fix: more overtravel . How you give it more overtravel depends on why its happening, rifles that have the gremlin recurring often usually need the overtravel stop filed, if gremlin occurs only when very lightly feathering trigger a stiffer sear spring, or block under sear spring will increase trigger weight slightly and will naturally cause you to pull trigger farther after hammer falls. A stiffer sear spring will also slow the sears downward travel when hammer rides over it, lessening the chance of a reconnect.

good post, mine cz858 use to miss fire all the time. i had the bolt carrier and trigger group replaced, that didn't make any different until i increase the sear spring. yesterday i fired 50 rounds, only had 2 missfire.

Only the 3rd time to the range, and about the 50th round since new, I let my buddy shoot my cz858 off the bench.

He probably did the slow trigger thing, as he shoots mostly precision. After he got one round off, it now does the soft primer hit thing. Managed to take it apart twice and get it to #### twice, but now rifle will not disassemble, striker stuck.

Sent away for repair. Will update. :(

im alittle slow , im not following you , what is this "overtravel" ?

heres are pics of the trigger group.

this pic below shows before the trigger is pulled.

this pic of the carrier moving rearward , it rides over the sear-disconnect.

Man, we really need to get to the bottom of what causes the Gremlin, and how to fix it. I set myself up with a CZ-858 as the ultimate SHTF rifle and it will certainly not be any good for that if it konks out on me due to some mysterious glitch. I need laminated print-outs of what exactly I will need to do if in the future my rifle starts to exhibit this behaviour.

Overtravel is the trigger movement after the hammer is released from sear.

after the carrier disconnects the sear as shown in your pic the carrier assembly continues rearward and when the hammer crosses sear again it can push sear down far enough to reconnect with disconnector, if the disconnector is not far enough forward from the trigger being pulled. When this happens hammer is not caught on sear and the gremlin appears.

Currently in the works are new production sear disconnector assemblies that move the disconnect lump rearward so that the hammer crosses sear before carrier disconnects trigger, leaving no chance of a reconnect. I will let everyone know what I think of them when they become available

After I replaced my trigger and sear assembly this never happened to my rifle again, but it would be nice to really understand what was wrong. I simply blame it on the lack of an autosear as a back up to hold the striker. If we could own f/a this would never happen, so I blame the liberals :)

So what percent of these rifles have this gremlin? Is it as prevelent in the CZ 858 as the VZ 58s Have they corrected the problem in newer rifles?Dave.

Never had this problem on mine at all.

I have managed to fire about 40 of these guns, none had an issue except for one. it fired bursts of 3-4 rounds and then would have to be manually reloaded. Partially stuck firing pin.
I ended up fixing it by sticking the firing assembly into some WD-40 for a few hours. The end result was cosmoline-like wax in the bottom of the container. Problem solved.

I am going to get another Vz58. They are well worth it!!!!!!!

I love mine, and I want another one!!! :)

btw, they are the simplest rifle to strip and clean.

I'll by 100 of these before I get an SKS. SKSs drive me crazy to clean and I have never had success with them, other than a SKS D which was a russian manufactured one.

Nope, no pics right now. Sorry.

SOrry, when I get back I am sure I will be able to find some pics for you. I seriously hate cleaning after firing corrosive through my SKS. Isn't fun.
CORRECTION.
I believe the rifle D model is actually a Norinco, not russian... right doesn't that doesn't make sense. Sorry ... It's late here.
My point is that just hard to clean.

I'll buy another one in the near future: I want one completely stock and another on which I'll graft on a scope sidemount with the lowest possible height over bore.
Besides, these rifles are real newbie flypaper, especially with girls: they go "oow, what is this? looks mean!" to "does it recoil much?" to "I want one! where do I get my card?" in about ten minutes, the time required to set a target up, tell them the ropes and letting them "let loose"!:D
And some even say they like the blue-gray paint...
PP.

..vz58 striker/hammer "gremlin"...

...gentlemen, after two years of study regarding this problem I have come to a controversial conclusion...the single gunpart that I have focused on is the "striker/hammer guiderod" located in the bottom area of the dustcover!!...if the guiderod is slightly bent upward, the striker/hammer will be pulled upward and sear engagement is seriously compromised (reduced). When the sear is worn, the "gremlin" becomes worse. I simply bent the guiderod downward...and changed the sear...so far, no malfunctions after 500 rounds......
