info wanted win, md 88

Well i did take the stock off and no makings at all.On another note i called the old gentleman i purchased it from and asked him what he remembers. Well now have more questions..lol,He said he bought it new in the box at a sporting goods store in Drumheller in the late 60's .I then asked if he restocked it as they were prone to cracking, his replay was no it came that way with the Mannlicher stock....I've searched the net for hours and can't find a thing except the md 70's that came out in 1968 with Mannlicher stocks. Thanks for all the comments, its just hard not to believe him,so if there is someone out there that can back the old guy up i would love to hear from you....

Very nice rifle!

Definitely a custom stock, as Winchester never offered the Model 88 with a mannlicher stock. If memory serves correctly, serial numbers after 1970 had letters.

As a lefty, I have always liked the leveractions. And I have owned a few Model 88's over the years. Right now, I have a mint post '64 in 284 Win and am working up a load with the 140 gr A-Frame.
I also have a customized 88 in 338 Federal with a heavy barrel and ghost ring sight. Another 88 is being rebarrelled to 7MM-08 as we speak. Both of these rifles are in the factory stocks at this time, but will be fitted with mannlicher stocks once I can locate a couple of nice pieces of walnut. A local stockmaker does beautiful work and will be doing these.

Years ago,I read an article in a magazine that pictured two custom Model 88's that John Wooters had built in 7MM-08 with beautiful mannlicher stocks, and I have wanted one ever since. Finally making it happen!

Collectors like the pre-'64 models with the checkered stocks, but I was told by Rogue River Rifles (way back when they were in CA) that the best ones for custom rifle work were the later models (post s/n 184000 or 189000; cannot recall which for certain) had the third genertion triggers that were the best to work with. They did beautiful work and built a very nice 88 in 358 Win for Craig Boddington that he said was very accurate. I just did not have $5000 US for one in the 90's ($4500 if you supplied your own action).

Thanks BlackRam...sounds like you are having fun with the 88's,they've always had a soft spot in my heart.and I own a few...i've seen factory model 70's from 1968 with factory mannlicher stocks...so was hoping this wouldn't be such a stretch. also thought they might of made some special things for their 100th anniversary

lol it's really starting to look that way.....was just hoping someone would know for sure. I emailed 2 Winchester specialist guys on the net ,only to be told nice gun and they only do antiques ...lol
thx Bryan

Thanks Kamlooky....well i called Cody today with no luck....seems they only have records to 1908....and could only tell me it was a 1966...but it was worth a try.....also asked if they could recommend a expert in Md 88's or Winchesters from the 60's....and no look there either....so more dead ends.
