Hey folks. I'm doing research for a novel and I know next to nothing about firearms (except the little I learned during a summer stint in the reserve an eon ago). I'll probably need more help later but right now what I'm trying to find out is what kind of handgun one of my characters is carrying. The book is set in the future in the U.S., but not very far in the future (probably about 15 years or so). The weapon will be one that was made sometime between 1990 and 2010ish. It is pretty small, not a lot of power & not very difficult to use and maintain. If someone out there could help me determine the make, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Looking for something smaller

I just took a look at your suggestions (& for what it's worth I also think the Sig Sauer is the prettiest of the lot ;) ), but I'm looking for something quite a bit on the smaller (daintier?) side. The idea is that this will have to do if push comes to shove, but a more robust weapon would have been preferred had one been available. I don't know, maybe a little revolver? Something a lady might carry in a purse in place of a can of mace?

My friend Marc MacYoung writes a blog for female writers so they can do justice to men and their various activities, including guns I believe. His blog is at http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=153530890&blogID=379345603

Since the setting is in the US and you prefer small, low caliber and easy to use, I will recommend a pistol or revolver that would be "prohibited" here in Canada.

If your character is gun savvy, I'd go for the Walther PPK in .380 ACP caliber as V29189*** suggested. IMO, the perfect pocket semi-auto pistol.

If not, I say go with a Smith and Wesson 642 .38 special...cool bling but simple to load and shoot. Or maybe the Airweight version.

Or you could pick up one of the Gun magazines that lists all the handuns annually with descriptions, calibres, prices etc. They usually come out in Dec for the new year.

The newest fandangled gun to come out is as Colt45CZ75 mentioned, the FN Five-seveN. Although from what I've read its anything but low powered.

Personally, I'd go with the Walther PPK because this gun shows no signs of ever becoming unpopular and can be had in 22LR, 7.65mm (.32acp) and 9mm Kurtz (.380Auto).
