Inglis buying advice?

So, I'm thinking of adding an Inglis HP to the collection. I'm talking to a guy whom I have bought from before who has two available. One is a Mk I (tangent sight, slot for stock etc) that is in very nice shape but has been reparkerized at some point (looks like BNIB)

The other a Chinese contract gun that is reported to be part of a 1500 gun lot given by Canada to the Belgians post WWII and that has most likely had the slide replaced (probably in the late '40's) that is pantographed with the serial number to match (CHXX). Finish is original and it has a pale blue canvas holster that is reputed to be Belgian naval issue.

Any thoughts on what would represent fair market value?

if you are going for a collector piece, then the Mk1 is the better of the two. the chinese gun is worth less, especially given the fact it is no longer has to original slide.

not sure of the Mk1, prices are crazy and hard to figure out what they actually sell for. seen some ask more than 2K, but no idea on the selling price if any. but the original chinese ones are around the 1000-1500, but that one is less because of the mismatch.

Interesting....I had thought the Chinese contract gun was the more valuable (it's asking price is more than 50% higher than the MK I). How much does being reparkerized hurt the MK I?

IMO

The refinished Inglis would make a nice shooter but the "collectable" value suffers.
Worth no more than a nice shooter FN/Browning - $600 to $800

The Belgium reissue could be worth much more but only to someone who wants one for thier collection - what makes you think the slide was replaced?
Really shouldn't be any reason for that as the guns were brand new when sent over there in 1950 and hardly saw any use before being surplussed.
If the slide is not original, I wouldn't pay anymore than the other one, an original gun could be worth $1000 or more
BTW, it should have two, number matching, magazines with it and the blue holster is air force not navy

Seller indicated from his research in the Clive Law he felt the slide had been replaced. From his email to me....

"I did some research in my Inglis Diamond book by Clive M Law.
This was a Canadian gun which was given to the Belgians after the war.
Canada gave them about 1500 Hi Powers and tried to get rid of their Chinese models and anything odd.

You can see the two C Broad arrow marks on the frame above the proof mark and on the left side of the slide behind the serations.

The frame serial number looks original. However with a serial number this low the slide should be different. It would not have the Mk1* stamped on it as the modifications had not been done. The FN would not have been on the slide and the characters would be .06" high, not the .08" they are.
Therefore the slide must be a replacement which explains the pantographed serial number on the slide and the different sized serial number on the barrel.

The book also goes into detail on how the Belgians put the serial number on the base and side of the mags which shows in the last picture. There are pictures of this in the book."
 
Thanks for the help and advice. I ended up making a package deal for the Chinese contract Inglis and a nice S&W HE MK II in .455. i think the price was fair to both parties and that is always a sign of a good deal IMO.Inglis1.jpgS&W HE MK II 2.jpg

The No.1 Mk1 was the first one and they are most likely the ones that are in the civilian market, including the Chinese contract pistols with the tangent sight, holster slot and CH in the serial number. The No.2 Mk1 was a mid-life upgrade and then the No.2 Mk1* is the model that is currently issued and used in the CAF. As a gun plumber that goes through literally hundreds of these at any given time who has also replaced barrels and slides I can tell you just by looking at close pictures of the serial numbers if that part has been replaced or not.
