I have a chance to make an offer on a Inglis HP with " DP" stamped on it ....the firearm seems fully functional.....any info about this marking would be appreciated...Thank You.....Peter

And just to add to that explanation Drill Purpose doesn't always mean that it is non-serviceable. Sometimes that stamp was just put on when it was deemed obsolete and used for drill practice, sometimes they would actually deactivate the firearm (the standards to which they were sometimes deactivated varied as well from simply clipping the firing pin to drilling through the chamber).

I would recommend you have a good gunsmith check out ANY DP marked gun before firing it. Sometimes (often) DP guns were selected for being worn out, or with defects rendering them no longer suitable for actual use.

Very true but sometimes they were also pulled off the assembly line brand new. Solid advice to get it checked out but not necessarily a red flag

Drill Purpose, used for training .

Not necessarily. I believe it can also mean Demonstration Pistol. I could be wrong, but I believe there is a reference made in Clive Law's book on this. Hopefully someone has the book and confirm that one way or the other.

I think you are right. Steve1987 was telling me this. Hopefully he will confirm.

Hi,

The prevalent theory on these is that 'DP' stood for 'Demonstration Pistol' which is explained in Clive Law's book 'Inglis Diamond'. I think this theory is probably accurate, of the roughly 150 DP series Inglis's made, the majority of them were shipped off to foreign governments for trials and potential purchases. I do have a record that states where the majority of the DP pistols were shipped to, although it is not entirely complete. From what's in the shipping records, it shows a lot of the DP series pistols were sent to Mexico. If you give me the serial number, there's a chance I could tell you where your pistol was sent to.

Here is my 'DP' series pistol that belonged to Tom Clift. Tom came to Canada from the UK during the war to assist with pistol manufacturing at Inglis as an engineer. The pistol was discovered by Toms son sitting on a shelf in a small box at his estate. The pistol appears unfired since leaving the plant, with internals still covered in factory cosmoline.

The consecutive pistol to mine, DP105, is recorded as being part the shipment to the Mexican government.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but the op said it had "DP stamped on it", not that it had a DP serial number prefix.

I am going on a written description that was sent to me.......besides having a ser # on the gun, there apparently is also "DP" stamped elsewhere on the gun ......until I actually see it (if I do!).....from the forum members info, I think "Drill Purpose" is the most likely scenario....Thanks

Yes, if it has the normal serial number and is stamped 'DP' proceed with caution....

Here are photos of the gun....I think the"DP" may actually be part of the proof mark......I was going on descriptions given to me without actually seeing the gun
