Inherited this 308, still new to firearms, can anyone recognize it.

Hi guys, like i said in my introduction, I recently got my PAL, and I am still learning. Part of the reason I got my PAL, is I had a relitive who is getting older and I didnt want the fierarms going out of the family.

You guys all seem to know eachother, and know exactly what you are talking about, so I am a bit intimidated and just lurk mostly... I learn lots, so thank you. I hope this is the right place to post this, but let me know if it is not, where I can post it, or if I should refrain. I recently inherited this gun. I know it is a 308, and not much else. Anyone recognize it?

I can't tell you much about it, up I'm fairly certain it's a Winchester Model 88.

Do t worry about being a new guy, I've been part of this forum for a few years now and I still mostly just lurk and maybe post one or two things every now again. Welcome to the group though.
 
Nice example of a Savage 99.

As with any gun that crosses your path get to know its history and the quirks of the breed. Some that don't look much different have eye watering collection value depending on year of manufacture, serial number, history, modifications (usually as in none) ..... and condition etc.

As scout says above, don't be too quick to scoff at an older firearm, nor don't take what so-and-so says about a certain model as gospel. Check even more carefully old milsurps, as some are quite rare and valuable. You have the world library at your fingertips. Do your own thing, not what expert boy tells you to do. Have fun and enjoy that 99.

Looks as if the scope would not clear the rear sight would not clear the scope with low rings. Some prefer having the option of two sighting systems, one being a backup to the other. There is a whole industry based on this for black rifles.

The rear sight is mounted on a collar integral with the barrel - earlier feature, as is the safety.

Nice, classic deer rifle.

Savage 99s were simplified, cheapened, and then eventually taken out of production.

You have a nice one in an excellent caliber.
 
possibly the BEST lever action around- absolutely superb accuracy at 200, don't know if i'd change anything on it- unless the scope is fubar- try 165-180 grain bullets - 1/12 twist- I've had one since 72 but mine is a magazine fed model-
 
The Savage 99 is probably as prevalent at hunt camps in Ontario as Winchester 94's and Enfields.

That one is set up old school with the see through mounts (most i've seen were).

Fine rifle, bet it shoots great.

Nice Savage. Pretty sure it is a model 99F as the band around the barrel for the rear sight dovetail denotes a lightweight barrel. Looks like 1950's early 60's production. There is a serial number look up on line for Savage rifles that should tell you year of production. The sling swivels were added by a previous owner not the factory. Quality on these earlier Savage rifles is very good.
 
Between the Savage 99 and the Winchester 88, I prefer the Savage. The Winchester has more modern lines, but the Savage feels better in the hands, has a better trigger, and in your example at least, has no detachable magazine to lose. Besides, the rotary magazine and cartridge counter add to the cool factor; I wouldn't want to give it up either. Nice rifle.
