Initial Cleaning

I've heard mention of the "initial cleaning" when you buy a new pistol and I was wondering what that consists of. I will be buying my first pistol most likely this weekend and most likely a CZ SP-01 shadow.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to the gun before I shoot it after purchasing it brand new?

I was hoping to buy it at TSE and also use it that same day as I know they have a cleaning area there in case I had to do anything to the gun before use.

Most new guns are covered in a thick oil to prevent corrosion during shipping and storage. You need to clean that oil off and properly lube it for use. On a semi I would put a small dab of white grease on the slide rails and a drop of oil on the extractor pivot, along with a drop or two of oil on the trigger assembly. If it has a pivoting link for the barrel lock up, oil that. If it is a sliding setup, use a dab of grease. You hardly need any lube, just use it sparingly and you will be fine.

on my 1911, i tore it apart and fully disassembled and soaked in kerosene, then brushed it clean, reassembled using synthetic gear oil and synth grease in the appropriate spots.

my other guns - nothing. unpack, load, fire.
 
usually run a rod down the barrel, check for obstructions, followed by a couple of patches- oil, good to go-but i haven't yet bought anything from overseas/mail-the only one i ever had to clean thoroughly was a remington 1100 that i got from sears,and it wouldn't cycle- so a cleaning was needed- big old hunk of grease on the hammer- a lot of the gunshops i've ran into take enough pride to do at least a cursory cleaning so their customers don't get dirty hands from handling the gun
