I decided to post here since it is more of an initial review of a pistol rather than a .22lr specific post.

Whoo Hoo! My Friday the 13th Ruger P45GCMKIII arrived in the mail today, just in time for the weekend. :dancingbanana:

It looks like this for anyone who doesn't know:

Anyway, initial impressions from having owned an MKII 22/45 are that I like the styling of the grip and general overall styling on the MKIII much, much more. The shorter 4.5" cut barrel is cool and the sights (although you can't see in the pic) are actually 3 dot sights (white paint) that are much better than I was expecting.

This pistol has 3 new features which I will briefly blab about now:

1. The loaded chamber indicator: Not really as big a deal as I thought it would be. It looks like it is made well enough that it shouldn't get jammed up and impede feeding (I'd have preferred it not be there, but what can you do.)

2. The mechanical lock: This is a pretty simple device - it's a screw. It’s located in the MSH and operates on the principal of “jamming”. Yes, the keys that come with the Ruger are just glorified screwdrivers that unscrew the screw so that it gets jammed into the plastic frame and "locks" the safety in place. Yes, this means that you need to have the pistol cocked in order to use it. Again, it's kind of useless as a lock and for the most part can be ignored with little worry of it breaking (Ill stick with the combo trigger lock).

3. The magazine safety. Oh god, does this thing suck! Because of this little wonder, the magazines do not drop free ever and the trigger actually feels worse than it should (hard to believe I know). This little device also complicates and adds two extra steps to disassembly and reassembly which involves inserting magazines and pulling triggers and removing magazines and pulling triggers (it’s major pain in the but at the very least!). Oh, and did I mention that the magazines do not drop free – you have to pull them out.

GOOD NEWS!!!!

I am here to tell you all that the magazine safety can be easily removed (if you've taken apart a Ruger MK before) and that part can simply be set aside for perfect MKII style operation. YES, the mags will finally drop free!!!

I have to say with this modification for the pistol makes the pistol worth the money paid. I am looking forward to shooting this baby tomorrow.

Anyone who thought about getting one but might have gotten scared off from the mag-safety, don't let that affect your decision. It can be fixed.

I bought the exact same pistol a couple of months ago, and love it to pieces for accuracy / reliability.

Me, however, as I am one of those silly people who do believe in insurance, will be waiting until it's out of warranty before I start modfying mine!

They are a whole lot of cheap fun!

Got one. Haven't test driven it yet. Hope to change that within a few days.... They are a great deal for the money, though...

I also have the 4.5" Bull bbl MKIII. It's a great little gun for little $$.
I actually bought it thinking I would sell my S&W41. But after shooting both side by side the Ruger is no S&W41. I think I'll be keeping the 41 after all.
The mag not "falling free" has never been an issue for me. The "sticking" actually prevents the mags from accidentally "dropping" to the table/ground if I'm not paying attention. Besides, I'm not in too much of a hurry to reload...the paper BadGuy's not going anywhere;)

Well said, I have the same one and I love it everyway it comes. I don't really care about the trigger pull as I think it is reasonable. It fit my small hand nicely. One of the greatest toy out there for this among of money.

You'll need a Mark 11 hammer or a shim if you want to get rid of the mag disconted properly. Drop in a Volquarsen Sear if you want a cheap light trigger job.

I took it out today and shot 500 rnds through it and for the most part is functioned perfectly. It's also amazingly accurate although mine is shooting 2-inches to the left at 25m.

Everything was perfect except for several FTE's due to not enough "oomph" in the cartridge (brass was still inside chamber and I could hear/feel the weaker shots); I also had two cartridges with no primers (got to love .22's).

In regards to removing the Mag-Safety. It is just one part (and its spring) that ride inbetween the hammer and the disconnector on the hammer pin.
It's very easy to remove (if you are technical and have tinkered with guns before - do not attempt this if you don't feel comfortable as it could get ugly and I don't want to be blamed). If you know what you are doing it is a 5 minute job.

As mentioned above, a shim might not be a bad idea to make up for the space that is made when you remove the part (but the hammer is kept centered by the bolt so I don't see it as being too bad, better to be safe than sorry. I checked my pistol today and all looks well with no weird wear in the components but I'll pick up a stainless washer tomorrow from Lordco (any washer will do as long as it is roughly the same width as the Mag-Safety).

Yeah you don't have to install the shim, but it will prevent wear over time as the hammer will slop around a little bit without it. The advantage of removing the mag disconect is that you don't have to install the mag during assembly/disasembly of the gun. Ruger neglected to mention that in the earlier owner manuals and there is an update manual on line from ruger

The sear I mentioned really does give you a much lighter trigger pull.

We have two, his and hers 22/45 mk111 target version. The Mrs. has just the new sear installed. I put the sear, target trigger and muzzle brake on mine. The extra weight out front and porting really helps with rapid fire shooting. Note on the target trigger if you decide to intall one. Get ride of the metal overtravel screw and install a nylon one.

As you can see from my Avatar, the guns pretty dam accurate. 10 shots off hand(two hands) at 25yrds. Of course I've never been able shoot such a nice tight group since then, so I'm glad I photographed the target!
