inletting and shaping stocks

I have a partially finished set of stocks that I just got from Noel with my new 1903 savage 99. I was wondering if inletting and or shaping a stock is beyond a regular handy guy or should I give it a go??? Don't really want to f**k up the wood. I was thinking maybe I could get Jason to inlet for me then shape myself.....any thoughts?????

If it's important and you've never done it before take it in.

for practise, I'd recommend fitting a piece of lumber to an sks with a dremel
