inletting black

I have inletting black (well it's lost in my shop somewhere) but I much prefer red lipstick. Less messy, easier cleanup, easier to see, easier to get.

After seeing someone mention anti-seize on another tread i tried it and it works very well. (i already had a bottle)
Its silver in color and is easy to see. Available at any Canadiantire's

+ 1 for prussian blue. I can't say I find cleanup difficult. As said, lipstick also works well. Or a person can mix a little soot or printer toner with vaseline to make a passable inletting black. The oil lamp trick also works well, but I find it to be slow.

Prussian Blue is easier to clean up than oil based lipstick and it doesn't soak into the wood.

I use a felt pen. Removes easily and transfers easily from metal to wood.

If you want to use soot, a good replacement for oil lamp soot is to use masking tape. Tear off a strip, twist it or fold it length wise and the light with a match. Tons of black soot and cheap. I used to use it once every year with my model 10 ;), made that front sight stand out and not reflect any light and made things 'possible' annually. :)

I used to use paint thinner in an alcohol lamp, but too much smoke for inside the house. In the shop not too bad. Nowadays I would probably go with lipstick or a candle.

I use a bit of gasoline sucked out of my snowblower or motorcycle with a syringe, in a .22 case with a paper match for a wick. It puts a good amount of soot just where I want it and the materials are always around.

So far I've just used a candle to soot up my parts for inletting actions to stocks. It works so well that I can't see bothering with anything else. The key is to get the part right into the flame so the soot forms before it can burn away.

And this way I don't leave greasy stuff on the wood which will affect any later finishing work. And when the candle isn't jammed up tight to a part for sooting the flame doesn't fill the air with black crud like some of the other soot generating options are likely to do.
