Inletting Black

I bought a semi-inleted rifle stock and I need some Inletting Black to find where the action/receiver is rubbing on the stock, could some member tell me where to get inletting black or something else to use.

I've used Prussian Blue. You can buy PB at most automotive parts stores.

It works ok but I prefer the real stuff from Brownells.

One part black boot polish to one part mineral oil, can substitute mineral oil for linseed and thinner mix. D.H.

If you can't get the real thing, lipstick works quite well--just make sure you get an even coat so you do not get false readings.

Candle soot. Or make a little smoker - cartidge case stuffed with cotton rag, soaked with oil, light the wick. If you are using a smoker, don't set fire to any shavings. Smudge the surfaces, then extinguish the flame until you are ready to smudge again. Maybe one of those miniature oil lamps, without its glass chimney, would work. I don't like anything that will leave an oily residue that could soak into the wood.

I that case, impress her: buy some high priced Van Cleef&Arpels lipstick tube. She'll never look at your rifle the same way...

I've found almost dry red oxide primer applied "dry brush" fashion to be very good. With a lacquer base, it dries quick, doesn't soak into wood and gives a good register of where to make the next chisel cut(s). Just be sure to brush it on virtually "dry" ... almost like a powder.
