I bought mine new in 1998. It was my first new gun purchase when I was 19, so I'm probably a little biased. I'm a leftie so the top tang mossberg safety was a nice plus. I still have it, and I've shot a pile of birds with it over the years. The only maintenance I've had to do is replace the original recoil pad. I've since bought newer shotguns, but in all honesty I still shoot as well with the 835. I still haul it out for geese every year.
Mine is reasonable on recoil. I know others have had concerns.
The back bored barrel is a bit of a limitation since you can't play with slugs. And the price of an 835 slug barrel is up there. What you gain in flexibility with the 8.5 chamber you lose a bit with the back bored barrel.
Resale? A ton have been made and they were priced to be affordable, so don't expect for it to increase much in value. However, there is a decent demand for used so you should be able to recover some money if you sell. Enjoy it and down some birds!
