Hello fellow members, im new to the forum. I recently picked up a wood furniture Mossberg 835 ulti mag 12 gauge. just wondering if anyone here owns/has used one of these guns? Are they reliable/build quality/ worth anything if I decide to sell in the future? Seems pretty solid and its my first goose gun so im just hoping it will last awhile if I decide to keep it. any input is appreciated.

Was my very first 3 1/2. Bought one when they first came out .Kicked the living crap out of me even more than a 10ga bps I bought later and I am a big dude
I called mine the mule
Other than that it worked just fine
Cheers

They are decent shotguns for the money. Built similar to the 590 series which is a very good shotgun. What 3macs1 said is the case though. They are very light and when shooting 3.5" its going to take you for a spin. No recoil management really built into the shotgun itself. A better recoil pad will probaly save you a bit a of heartche/getting slapped around by your shotgun.

I liked my 835 synthetic for trap shooting. Thanks to the .775" bore I got around 40 fps more speed from 3 dram 1 1/8 oz loads and combined with a Carlson's .727" choke tube the beasty threw wonderfully dense patterns out to 50 yds+ and was great for meat shoots. Us older folks remember Stan Baker's barrels (.800" bore with choke tubes down to .720") that are highly sought after by trap shooters and are pricey if ye find one. The 835 is a kinda secret trap shootin' device fer folks that realize the benefits of a "twelve-tenner" for getting tight patterns and better speed from trap loads.;)

The big 10 bore 28" barrel made it easy to maintain my swing, but on 300 bird registered shoots I sure noticed the extra weight at days end compared to my 870.

The 835's are built fine enough fer the job & can be tweeked easy to suit folks needs. They be an honest, decently made gun that is adaptable for many uses and
at a fair price.

I bought mine new in 1998. It was my first new gun purchase when I was 19, so I'm probably a little biased. I'm a leftie so the top tang mossberg safety was a nice plus. I still have it, and I've shot a pile of birds with it over the years. The only maintenance I've had to do is replace the original recoil pad. I've since bought newer shotguns, but in all honesty I still shoot as well with the 835. I still haul it out for geese every year.

Mine is reasonable on recoil. I know others have had concerns.

The back bored barrel is a bit of a limitation since you can't play with slugs. And the price of an 835 slug barrel is up there. What you gain in flexibility with the 8.5 chamber you lose a bit with the back bored barrel.

Resale? A ton have been made and they were priced to be affordable, so don't expect for it to increase much in value. However, there is a decent demand for used so you should be able to recover some money if you sell. Enjoy it and down some birds!

Sounds like ill keep it then haha. I got it for 250 from a guy i work with so i think it was worth it. I did shoot it with 3 1/2s and like 3macs1 said it does kick, but im not recoil sensitive so it doesnt really bug me. However i do think a new pad to replace the hard as rock rubber one would make it more fun to shoot long sessions. Thanks all for the input, looking forward to shooting a bit more now, hope the weather n snow clear up soon here in edmonton haha

I had one, It was a nice gun but it kept dumping the shells out the bottom when being pumped. I missed a load of geese because of that problem. I think I might have bought 3macs1 10ga BPS after that.. I was still finding pieces of that 835 in my duck blind last season.

You may have and I hope it worked well for you if you did. My bps never gave me any problems. I sold it on the EE, real nice shape with wood/ bluing and I think it went out west but not 100%
I didnot need it any more with two 10ga browning golds :) which I still have
Cheers

-UPDATE-

Well ive been using my 835 for several weeks now goose hunting. I was cleaning the gun out after yesterdays trip and noticed what appears to be a couple small chunks of metal missing from the trigger group on my gun. if you look at it you can see the corners appear to have broken off...anyone else hear anything about this happening on this gun? kinda worried =[

That's pretty common with the polymer trigger guard on the Mossbergs. On the older models those tabs were smaller and when they broke it would screw up the trigger assembly. They're beefed up plastic now so it shouldn't be a problem.

I use a 835 in marsh camo as my back-up if the beretta calls it quits during a hunt. I really like it, and it shoots great.

I recomend one, but it was quite a bit more then my 870
