Sorry if this is a redundant question. I’m having no luck figuring it out/deciding
Currently my stag10 wears a Holosun with ACSS reticule red dot + a 4x sig magnifier.
It’s fun, but I’m looking for more magnification possibly.

I’ve been eye balling 2-10 scopes with illuminated + bdc reticules. Ex, HiLux tac-v 2-10.

I’ve also been looking into LPVO’s, again, with illuminated bdc reticules. I have a strike eagle 1-6 and I’m not a fan of the eye box. I love the ACSS reticule and was looking at the 1-8 from PA. But I hear the SE and PA are the same glass (same factory). Another optic I’m interested in is the Burris RT-6 (1-6) combo with the Fastfire 3, but I’m worried about the added weight.

I’ve been looking at the Aero Precision lightweight mounts (3oz?).

Budget = 800 +/-
Philosophy of use = standing/resting on a bag etc & plinking steel for fun from, 50 out to 600 if I can at most (probably goofing off trying to ring the gong at 200/300).

I’ve been wasting so much phone data at work trying to research scopes, vortex viper pst etc etc

At that above price range, something with a decent eye box/reticule etc

Any advice or guidance for a novice is appreciated guys, thanks

Well I can appreciate someone who comes here asking questions and actually states their intended purpose.

From my perspective, the stag10 (mine in 308) was never going to be a close range “plinking” gun. If that’s what someone wants, get a smaller caliber AR15 or some form of that variant, atleast in my opinion.

These things are a ton of fun to stretch out with, and as such I ended up with a Vortex Viper PST gen 2 3-15. For the money, they’re good optics with a lot of features I liked. I tried it with my Nightforce NX8 1-8 but found the magnification range to be far too low for what I wanted.

I know your budget comes in a little light to spring for the viper PST gen 2’s, but a few more months of saving could be worth it.

Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x40 M3 mil-dot is what I use. It’s what I had laying around and it works well for my purpose. It’s also light weight and can be found for $800 on the EE.

I have the aero precision mount and its noce and light but the way they clamshell and tighten at the bottome makes it a ##### to level you crosshairs. When you tigten it it rotates your scope.

I put a Leupold VX5 2-10 in Alberta tactical rings on my Stag 10. A little stretch in terms of cost for your budget (scope was $900 and the rings were $150) but a nice rifle deserves a nice scope. I am guessing here, but there will probably be a few Black Friday sales coming up soon and you can find some deals if you look.

The Trijicon’s look amazing, a little expensive though.
The cab’s scopes look interesting, and they must be decent if a couple already recommend them.
I think I’m still leaning towards an illuminated 2-10 or a 1-8 (or 6) though. Unless I use a 45 degree mounted red dot on a 4-12 (or whatever)

I still appreciate the input guys! I’ll read up on as much as I can!

A GREAT budget scope is the Bushnell elite tactical straight 10x40, can be had second hand for about $200, I have had a few over the years and have one right now on my famae and a new one on my shelf that I plan to put on my stag when I finish building it. Since Its a fixed power scope I find that the glass is more on par with the mid level variable power scopes, great reticle and it just looks good all round, holds up to 308 recoil all day. May not be everyone cup of tea but its a good scope to atleast get you in the door till you can find the scope you really like/want. I don't really have anything bad to say about besides no illuminated reticle which isn't really needed.

PS, I've had 4k plus Schmidt and benders, a couple acogs and trijicon optics, leupolds, elcans, vortex and everything in between and that bushnell really left a warm impression on me haha.

Personally I have had good success with LPVOs like the vortex and others out to 600m on torso size gongs. For example here is a Burris 1-4x optic with a BDC reticule that once I sighted in was deadly for mid range rapid fire.

Now, that said, depending on what kind of shooting you want to do, that may not be nearly enough magnification for you. In no way do I come close to spotting hits at that distance, I would need over 8x for sure, so if paper punching is your goal, consider a higher power scope.

If you intend to stick to having fun and doing some bench, some standing, I'd say stick to a LPVO like the ones mentioned in posts above.

My next one for the Stag will be the NF NX8 1-8 scope. That will be some sweet piece of glass when it finally lands in the country.
