A recent discussion among a few skeet shooters focused on safety issues. Two topics arose and I am seeking your clubs' policy and /or rules regarding the following:

1. On the skeet field with shooters using semi-auto or pump guns, one comment focused on whether only shell should be loaded at a time for shooting singles. Let's assume we're talking about station one. The discussion centered that one extra round could be inserted into the magazine if the shooter missed a target and called for the option. The shooter might load two into the magazine and after shooting, end up moving from one station to the next with a round in the chamber or one remaining in the magazine. With most semi-autos the action automatically remains open after the last round is fired but sometimes in the heat of competition, shooters motions become automatic and this might be overlooked. Some shooters of semi's or pumps like to initially load two shells to keep their timing and focus in check. Naturally the gun should always be pointed in a safe direction regardless of being loaded or not and this is not usually an issue with break action models. Thus, the discussion centered on should only allow one shell be loaded at a time when shooting singles with semi's and pumps.
Does your club have a rule or policy regarding only one shell being loaded at a time when shooting singles with a semi or pump? If so please state your rule.

The second item . . .
2. The next topic discussed was when to retrieve spent hulls. Some shooters like to pick up their hulls after the last shooter has finished on each station and while the shooters are moving from one station to another A shooter walks around sometimes in front of the finished station, or to the side to gather their own spent hulls. Some clubs only allow hulls to be picked up after the last shooter finishes station 8 and the guns are back in the rack.
Does your club have a rule or policy regarding when shooters are allowed to retrieve spent hulls? If so please state your rule.

Your comments are appreciated. If this topic has been discussed in previous posts, please state a time period that I might refer to and gather additional information.
Are these two items hard, fast rules of any skeet associations or do they vary from club to club? Thank you for your comments.

1. No policy or rule. Two shells are permitted on each station except #8 regardless of gun type. The gun must be open and empty when not on the shooting station.

2. Nothing official. It's left up to the squad.

we load one shell at a time and empty hulls are picked up after the final round and with guns in the rack, not sure if this is policy but it is the way it is done everytime i have been there.

The club that I shoot at, as well as my previous club, allows two rounds in the gun, as long as there are at least two targets remaining for the shooter on that station.

1. Allowed to load a max of 2 shells on all stations except 8. Actions have to be open and the gun unloaded when not on a station.

2. Depends on the club, some clubs grounded hulls are property of the club. Our club, they are the responsibility of the shooter to pick up their hulls, no set and fast rule, some of us pick them up as we leave the station, others pick them up after the round.

Claybuster x3

I will add that shooters picking up hulls after each station can be a royal PITA though. They delay the squad that much more which I find rude at our one field club when others are waiting to get on the field. If they are the only ones shooting however then it doesn't matter.

My biggest pet peeve on the skeet field however is the shooters who shoot #8 station by stepping on the station, shoot the high house target then turn around and shoot the low house target instead of all taking their turn to first shoot the high house then the low house. I feel it is much safer to have the squad lined up behind the shooter than milling about centre moving back and forth as each shooter swings from high to low to shoot.

Get one of those magnets that let you pick up hulls without having to bend over. Much easier and quicker.

Or, go with an o/u, catch 'em as they pop out, and never have to take the time to clear garbage.

Same as above - two in at any station except 8, and unloaded and open before walking off the mark.

Our club your allowed two shells at a time except for station 8 actions open all times except on a station no rules on hull pick up but most tell everyone to pick up when round is complete

At the Club I shoot at occasionally. Once a hull hits the ground its Club property. They come along with a wheeled dolly later and scoop them up. But they just dump them anyway. As for Station 8. Yes 1 round in the gun but its much quicker to let one shooter shoot both High and Low, the the next shooter.

Same deal here. For a pair of singles you load 2. If there is a double after that you still only load 2 at a time.

Guns down, actions open when not shooting is the rule. I always inspect chamber of a pump or semi before moving off.

Skeet with a pump gun is a hoot. Last couple times I've used a 590A1

...pump guns are a hoot in general...

Keep the game moving, load 2 and shoot. One at a time drives me nuts... We implemented a club rule no empty picking until the round is over for all shooters. Reason being people were too slow and it is a safety hazard. CD

I think that most of the comments here cover it. I dont know why anyone at the OP's club would think its ok to load three in a semi in case of a miss. I think the rule across the board is no more than 2.

We have buckets at our club so most people will grow their hills in there. The guys with the semis and pumps vary between picking them up after their turn or at the end of the round.

:agree: if I am shooting a semi auto I like to pick up my hulls at the end of the round.

We used to allow 2 shells for singles until....one day the wind was blowing hard in. A shooter was on 7, shooting the singles, two shells in the gun. Calls for the high house, breaks it. A piece of broken target hits him under they eye hard enough to cut him and draw blood. The un-controllable reaction was to turn away from the impact...unfortunately toward the rest of the squad with a live round in the chamber. A freak accident, not the shooters fault (I would rate him an extremely safe and safety conscious shooter) and no one else was hurt, but, the risk could have been eliminated by only having one shell in the gun. I understand that some people think the game is too slow, but I would rather be slow than dead.

Picking up hulls after the round is just better etiquette, but please don't venture past station 8 or in front of the low house window!

The same thing could happen on a doubles bird, so I don't see the point in only allowing one shell at a time on singles. Nssa rules allow either set up. I've shot skeet and refereed for nearly 25 years and have taken and seen some pretty hard knocks from target debris and shot. There is a floating piece of cartiledge in my nose from a piece of target from which I thought someone had reached out and punched me as I pulled the trigger. I never saw a shooter sweep the squad as a result. On 7 you have to make quite a turn to point at your squad mates. Shooting the bird before the centre stake is often the cause of dangerous target shrapnel on 7 and should be discouraged. But, to each there own and your club, your rules. Just keep on shooting.
