Inreach or other satellite communication device recommendations

I'm glad to see a lot of people are really liking the Zoleo product.

The thing to consider is if you want mapping capabilities. Zoleo is a messaging app only while InReach has robust mapping in addition to messaging.

Both services use the same satellite system so connectivity is exactly the same.

The InReach devices also allow for tracking that can be set up for remote "pinging" if desired. (Your wife can see if you really are in deer camp or at the casino)

The InReach also doubles as a GPS device and can show data such as contours and elevations once the base maps are downloaded.

I activated my Explorer + for a month and never used it on my hunting trip so went to cancel my monthly activation and accidentally cancelled my whole subscription. I hope I won't have a hassle re-subscribing next year.

Hi MD, I did that once a few years ago I reactivated from a cancelation and was surprized to find all my historical mapping in place.

It looks like Zoleo offers tracking too, but its a $7.50/month upcharge to get it.

I don't need the GPS/basemap/whatever functionality of an inReach, my phone already does all that for me, but tracking would be nice. I'll have to re-compare plan costs now...

They use the same satellites but when I was researching before buying my Zoleo, the concensus was that the Zoleo does connect and sends messages faster. As Suther already mentioned, Zoleo also tracks.

The big Inreach is a full blown gps. A better comparison would be the Inreach Mini.

The inReach Mini2 has been great for me. Buddies use the older inReach Mini guiding trips and have been happy with them.

I just leave mine on the cheapest annual subscription, so it’s always ready to go. Some months it sees little use, others I go over on messaging. But it’d take a pile of messages over the limit to make up the cost on the next plan, so I don’t sweat the extra the months I’m over.
