hey guys, i noticed where my gun safe is, isnt the driest place in the cold winters-- So im about to move it elsewher.

however- in this past winter i noticed that the condensation was building up in there at times- i have Rice / humidity catchers et in there aswell.

but i notice the Franchi horizon barrel inside was getting orange---
ive noticed the Ruger 35 blued barrel is also getting orange---

i figure most are doing it, so ive been cleaning them way to regularly- now its spring and time to move the Safe-

What damage is being done with minor surface rusting in the bore itself?

i figure unles it was left for years........it might rust.
i also figure that firing a shot even hunting scenerio or on the target now an then, is going to Skim it down?

in the mean time, is it OK to put some CRC on a Wipe as i wipe down the bore?

I have my guns barrel facing down - I put either gun oil (Hopps) or a few drops of transmission fluid down the barrel enough so it makes it all the way down to the muzzle. Prior to use I run several dry patches through the barrel until all the oil residue is gone. In your case I would try removing the rust 1st by using a nylon brush - push it all the way through remove the nylon brush remove the rod from the barrel attach the nylon brush and repeat. You may want to then run a couple dry patches through (should look) brownish. Just shooting a round may damage the rifling of the barrel depending how much the rust has penatrated. On a side note the inside my barrel looks very clean - I will get copper fouling after use which I do not mind as long as the rifle still shoots accurate. However, I do remove the copper fouling when I put it away for the season.

clean the bore with g96 or some such product brush and sean
then put a light coat of oil on a patch push thru bore leave a light film that is all that is needed
check occasionally and repeat if necessary its call matanince

Small old type 25-40 watt light bulb in a safe might keep it warm enough to stay dry. One can also find small cupboard heaters. We have a heater in our safe room running on a thermostat which helps. One needs to have a little opening in the top for air to escape. Warm moist air rises.

I did the same with the light bulb for years in a very humid basement . I used low watt refrigerator bulbs.

Up here climate is quite dry so I never experienced rust on anything really, but in my safe I have silica bags, I also have one in my powder box and my ammo cabinet.
I’m pretty lazy when it comes to oil the bore of my rifles…

It's dry here. But everything including the bore gets a quick wipe down using a flannel rag or patch with Birchwood Casey Barricade (or any similar product); back in the 1970's I did something similar with Johnson floor wax.

It isn't just worries about humidity - your sweaty paws have been all over the bluing before you put it away. You DO clean your firearms anyways, before putting them in the gun safe, right?

Right?

Dang straight since me youth, and I still have a bit of Aero Wax left in the tin I bought in '70. I've only used the wax though as a release agent
when bedding rifles & such.

hey Rick, I'd be askin about 'rust on the outside of my barrel', or 'rusty finger prints on my rifle', if i were not to give em a wipe with the oiley rag before they go home.....
