Inspire me with your hunting rifle in 308 Winchester !

Thats a tough question.
308’s are just the bees knees.
I have owned at least 8 of them.
Sold them all and regretted every one.

I now carry a Springfield waypoint 2020 in 308 and it is simply the best and most accurate hunting rifle i have ever owned and that includes some premium competition.

Topped with spuhr rings and a vortex LHT, it is a pleasure to carry and shoot.

Also loved my ruger Scout and my remington mountain light. Miss those ones.

I picked up a Ruger American with the short barrel and the Ruger muzzle brake. This thing is dead nuts accurate with my handloads and very easy on the shoulder. One flyer (that's me and my old eyes) but those are 1" squares and this was shot at 100 m.

Savage 10T/R, accurate as hell but a tad heavy for lugging through the bush. gonna buy a Tikka compact or a Ruger American ll this year in same chambering.

First rifle was a Browning BLR in 308. Shot my firsts with it (Moose/Deer) back in the late 80’s. Can’t remember if it was Japanese or Belgium made. Slick action for a lever and the clips were handy at the time. A B&L Elite 3-9 sat up top. Traded it in on a 7mmRM and have regretted it since.

Two season ago, I carried a 700P 308 afield in open cuts for Moose. Don’t get me wrong, a 700P/5R/HB or Sendero is doable if your sitting on a watch for the day but at #10lbs it’s not something I do again if I was walking a lot.

If I were looking at a 308 (which I am), I’d take a serious look at some of these (and these are in my preference only since I have or had the top three.)

Rem Mtn or Model Seven (you’ll have to find these used as they're out of prod)
Tikka T3/T3x (if you want a clip)
Weatherby VG2 (swap the stock though)
Browning XBolt (if you want a clip)
Win 70

My only criteria these days for any set up is somewhere between 6.75-7.5lbs all in, unless it’s a Mag Cal then 8.5lbs max. That and I do like the 700 platform based on the availability of aftermarket parts.

I have a Browning X Bolt in 308, with a Vortex scope on it. So not a super high-end setup, but it suits me and was within my budget. I do love it. It is enjoyable to shoot, and consistently my most accurate gun. I like bringing it to the range and setting up for the hundred yard Target and kicking back with a travel mug of coffee, taking my time between shots, really getting the most of my time there.

I do feel bad for my brother, he really invested in a 308 semi-auto, and a year or two later the stupid morons put it on the order in Council list. Like a lot of guys, he has been stuck ever since. He doesn't want to give up on it and invest in a new one yet, cause he doesn't have the budget and he's hopeful that a new government will change the law. But until then he is stuck not being able to shoot. He's an act of service right now, and for serving the country, that's how the country treats him. I wish the poly types had to look guys like him in the eye when they do the nasty things they do.

I don’t claim that my .308 is the best hunting rifle for everyone but it is the best hunting rifle I have found for me. I acquired a 3 screw Remington model seven action and had a 20 inch factory stainless barrel screwed on it. It sits in a CDL factory stock and is topped with a 1.5X4.5 Bushnell scopechief VI. I have never had it weighed but it handles well and is light enough and accurate enough for the shooting I do.

Man I think a tikka t3x lite stainless in 308 solves almost all hunting problems in Canada.

That being said I don’t have one at the moment haha

I have been running an sig cross which is pretty easy to carry and shoot in the field. But “best” ? I really don’t know…

Winchester model 70 comes close
