Inspire me with your hunting rifle in 308 Winchester !

I've hunted with a lot of rifles, I particularly like MILSURP.

But I have a Model 70 in 308 that I keep coming back to. All I can say is its just a good rifle and it works for me. Its put a lot of food on my table.

Got a crazy deal on a blaser R8. Got a .308 bbl for it and it LOVES barnes tsx in 150gr. Has about 1150 foot pound of energy left at 500 yards, which is far beyond anything I would ethically engage.

I have validated my bullet drop out to 450m

I have a fix rifle with both .308 and 6.5. Less accurate at the moment but very very light

I went to .270 win because the .308 has a hard kick to it. But I had a Browning Bar in .308 that had zero recoil. Very heavy rifle for carrying in the woods. .308 is a good round, hard hitting. .270 is better all around caliber for all size if game and long distance. How many enfields do you you own rifle chair? Just use the .303 British just as good as the .308.

I've been enjoying a ruger m77 compact with 16.5" barrel. It's more of a back up/truck/ranch gun. Super handy and mine shoots sub moa with factory Norma ammo. The ruger m77 scout is also a good choice, yet again handy, all weather style, accurate, and a nice set overall! Shot 1 inch with 2.5x power scope.

I don’t claim that my .308 is the best hunting rifle for everyone but it is the best hunting rifle I have found for me. I acquired a 3 screw Remington model seven action and had a 20 inch factory stainless barrel screwed on it. It sits in a CDL factory stock and is topped with a 1.5X4.5 Bushnell scopechief VI. I have never had it weighed but it handles well and is light enough and accurate enough for the shooting I do.
I've got the same scope on a Tikka lsa 55. Love it other than I can see the front site hood on 1.5x ahha

I ( like many on here) have a wall of rifles some pieces of Kinetic Art some projects that never great in their prime . I cannot explain why but everytime I head out I grag my Savage 99C in .308 . I have rifles now that I yearned for when younger & priorities for $ were far different, yet I still reach for that .308 ? Can’t explain it but it gives me a chuckle everytime.

Bought my lady an old micro medallion in 308 for a hunting rifle, it’s a gem to shoot, very friendly with recoil. My dad has a pre 64 model 70 in 308 he’s thinking of selling, I may jump on it if he does.

As the bore size increases relative to the case capacity, you can move to shorter barrels with less loss in velocity. As a result, whenever I look at a .308 nowadays I look at shorter barrels, 16"-20". If the extra speed of a 22"-24" barrel matters that much, there are faster cartridges out there to consider which will be more effective regardless.

I had good results with my last .308 which I've posted here before, a 16" XPR Stealth that I sold to a young guy as his black bear hammer back in '21:

Before the Winchester, I had a Zastava M70 which was garbage (I've had poor experiences with two of them consecutively). I also had a Steyr Pro Hunter like 20 years ago that I liked but didn't love.

To me a good .308 is going to put in work, so I tend to favor options which aren't too pretty so also aren't very inspirational. :)
