Looking to scope a No. Mk III* as a backup hunting rifle (it's already bubba'd - no loss of collector or historic value). I've tried one smith less mount and it's crap. Is the S&K Insta-Mount a good, stable mount, or should I get the rifle drilled and tapped for a solid mount?

i just ordered a scope base from brownells made by williams gun sight.
it is a drill and tap and requires offset rings but seems to be the one that will allow the lowest mounting option.
i will post back with pocs when i get it setup

The S&K mount is rock solid. I've owned two now and they are quality pieces.
The problem is they can be tough to find here in Canada, they are heavy compared to simple weaver bases and obviously more pricey. They also position the scope quite high above the bore, and some sort of cheekpiece needs to be considered if using the original butt-stock.
If it is already bubba'd I'd drill and tap hands down.

This ^^ I happen to own one of Sun_and_Steel's S&K (thanks again) and it's rock solid on one of my NO5 MK1. No drill/tap, easy to return to original and very functional.
Yup, rock solid, reversible, first class. They're good enough that I wouldn't consider drilling and tapping, even if I didn't think it was sacrilege - simply no point. Make sure you get the one for regular rings - S&K rings are good, but spendy.
