An outdoor social media influencer with millions of followers is accused of lying to obtain a Yukon hunting licence, going on a hunting spree and illegally killing several bears over a single week, according to court documents.

Tristan James Hamm, 32, who goes by "Mr. Adventure" on Instagram, describes himself as an outdoor connoisseur, animal lover, adventure athlete and entrepreneur.

Hamm has over two million followers on Instagram, with photos of him rock climbing, hiking, boxing and riding horseback, though his account became private Wednesday morning.

He's now facing 19 charges including both territorial and federal offences, accused of killing two Yukon black bears and a grizzly.

Court documents allege Hamm provided false or misleading information to obtain a Yukon resident hunting licence. He's charged with illegally killing a black bear on Bove Island, not far from Carcross on May 17. Hamm is accused of killing a black bear later that month on May 19, at Dry Creek, in western Yukon. Then on May 21, court documents say he killed a grizzly bear near Kluane Lake.

Hamm is also facing charges related to exporting remains of two black bears and a grizzly outside the country this past summer.

All 19 of the charges have not been proven in court. Hamm is not in custody and the case will come before the Yukon territorial court in January.

CBC reached out to Hamm for comment but did not hear back. CBC also asked Hamm's lawyer if the accused is in Whitehorse and the lawyer said he is not at liberty to say.

Hearing about the charges, wildlife advocate Sue Greetham told CBC she's outraged.

"I just have a sinking feeling in my stomach, my heart just about breaks and I get goosebumps all over me, it's just the saddest thing," she said.

Greetham is the president of Grizzly Bear Protection Yukon, an advocacy group calling for more protection of bears. She says she opposes trophy hunting and hopes for stronger regulation around legal hunting.

As for illegal hunting, Greetham says anyone found guilty of illegal hunting should be made an example — a warning to others.

"I want it to be a significant message sent. I think the fines should be raised, I think there should be jail terms for such egregious criminal activity regarding wildlife, I just don't understand it."

The sky is falling! Holly f@ck you can't make this up..

I had the same feeling once. Got a bad case of buck fever and missed a 200 yard shot on a 200” non typical whitetail.

Well he won’t be the first, an other one that have a really popular YouTube channel ain’t doing everything like it should and got fought a few years back poaching a dal sheep!

I don’t agree with that guy!!
"We're kinda lost for words," said Bryce Bekar, president of the Yukon Fish and Game Association, when he heard about the charges against Hamm.

"We all understand how difficult it is to get a licence and become registered with the [Yukon] Department of Environment," he said, questioning how someone might be able to acquire a Yukon resident licence under false pretenses, such as the charge against Hamm.

Bekar said, regardless of the species, any time there's a court case about illegal hunting it tarnishes the image for all hunters.

"It just doesn't look good for all of us that are really trying to do the best we can and promote ethical and responsible harvesting," said Bekar.

Mr Adventures next adventure should be in a prison. Maybe his cellmate be some huge indigenous dude who believes one of the slain bears to be his uncle. Let the adventure begin….lol.

Typical CBC article, literally cannot help themselves throwing anti quotes in when its not relevant.

WE NEED MORE REGULATION ON LEGAL ######xx. As for illegal which is exclusively what the topic is currently on, minimal meaningful statement! Social commentary versus ethical harvesting comment, which isnt relevant to poaching / illegal hunting.

If I didnt know better I would think it's unintentional

ahah that is a joke for sure knowing how many people are really charged in getting a license before a year of residency ... getting caught and being in court is 2 different things ... did you know yfga will be part of the accusation and will get some money if there is a charge win in court ...

DNR don’t even have to investigate and build a case anymore, they simply troll instagram and Facebook etc.
Very common.

My (now deceased) brother in law, was a Lawyer, and he said that Social Media made his job as a Prosecutor, VERY much easier!

The only intelligent part of the Ceeb's fluff addition to the story was the bit right at the end. "I just don't understand it." That, I believe!

Well, that, and her being outraged. Outraged seems to be the natural state of the stupid...

Personally I think that Mr adventure should be banned from hunting in the Yukon for ever period! As for the yfga I really don’t think they are doing much for us…. But I might be wrong lol

What is the actual offense that he did? Probably was in the Yukon less than 185 days.

what we do know or what we speculate lol ...

to get a hunting license as a resident you need to be resident for a least one year before applying. to get that license you need to go to an environment office and make a statement and provide proofs of your residency. exemptions can apply if you need to travel for school or medical to not stay for a year but not the first year you apply ...

lol why they will do something they received yearly $36000 that was paying the salary of the executive director that was retired from federal govt when i was still a board member there ... i do not know today but that is telling me enough ... a lot of the outfitters are part of it and many of the board members are guides too ...including the president ...

And to get a hunting license as a “new” hunter you need to do you hunter education course!
Anyway by the sound of It he shot 3 bears in one season(1 grizzly and 2 black) you allowed only one black in the fall and one in the spring)
Anyway it would be nice if people would play by the rules so the one that do don’t get bad rep!

the two black bears are not one in the fall and one in the spring both can be taken yearly in the fall or in the spring.

indeed for your last sentence but for some people playing by the rules if for others the same for the ones caught on dui or other things ...

Anecdote in the same vein:

Jerry, a fella I used to work with had a stuffed bald eagle that his dad shot in the 1930's or 1940's, can't remember the year he said anymore. Was concerned the eagle was going to take his chickens.
A precious family heirloom.

The dad was so proud of his bagging the eagle that he called the local newspaper, which promptly published the story and picture along with his name.
The local game cop read the story and went to see the dad to give him a tax bill...otherwise known as a fine.
