American made 92FS's have a lanyard loop pin that almost literally falls out when the lanyard loop is pushed inward, and pressure is taken off of the pin. There is no spring pressure applied by the pin...it is held in place by the spring weight of the hammer spring on the lanyard loop, and it, in turn, holds the lanyard loop in place. The Italian made models use a roll pin to secure the lanyard loop, which actually compresses slightly upon installation. Since your Beretta is Italian made, this is the reason why you had to hammer the pin out.
I personally don't like the roll pin all that much. All of my Beretta's have been converted to the US set-up, simply for ease or removal, and the fact that they are solid pins, not hollow. It also allows for easier testing of different hammer springs when trying to set up that "perfect" trigger feel.
