Installing a varmint barrel on a CZ-457 regular stock

This question quite often pops up on different forums.
Although the compatibility chart of CZ does not mention it, yes you can.
I received a beautiful Canadian Edition CZ-457 stock and I removed the heavy barrel from my At-One stock.
The varmint barrel drops right there.
I can pass a playing card underneath and the sides of the barrel for the first 5'' from the receiver but not the last 5'' due to the edges of the channel narrowing and with no needs to relieve them since there is no undue pressure.
The varmint does not rest on the bottom of the channel for there is a space underneath the barrel.
That means the extra thickness of the varmint fills the free floating space of the regular one and remains floating but with less space.

I'm confused about 1 thing you said.

A free floated barrel has no contact with the stock anywhere (except maybe bedding under the 3/4" closest to the action). If you can't pass a piece of paper along the last 5 inches of the forend, then that wood is going to interfere with your barrel harmonics, even if there is clearance on the bottom, the barrel still needs clearance on the sides.

Also, as you tighten the front action screw, it'll wedge that barrel into the forend where it's too tight. If the action isn't bottomed out in the stock, you may see inconsistency issues - every time you take it out and put it back, that pressure will be different.

Apologies if I misunderstood your post.

Thanks Canuck65....no problem.
I'll try to be clearer.
The barrel stands free floating except the last 5" of the forearm - beginning of the tapering of the original slim barrel - where the card was stopped because the edges where slightly touching ,I believe with ultra light pressure, because when I did deposit the barrel, I did not feel any resistance; the entire barrel/receiver assembly went home without any play.
The barrel not touching the bottom of the channel for the entire length of the forearm.
If I sand a little bit the edges, the clearance will be consistent with the clearance of the 5" part of the forearm towards the receiver.
All this with the action torqued down at 25 pounds.
I don't know if the harmonics of the barrel will be modified since it is a heavy barrel.
I'll be at the range tomorrow and post the results.
And, by the way, I found the hard way the correct size of the Torx screws bit is T-25 and NOT T-20.
I will write a post about that soon.

Thanks.

Back from the range....

Everything went smooth the way it must be.
Shooting at 50 meters, very light wind, using a Caldwell bipod only, no rear bag.
CCI Blazer 40gr. and CCI Standard Velocity 40 gr.
May be the sub-sonic Std Velocity does not like the 24" barrel.

Today,
At 100 meters.
10 bullets.
The two flyers when you think you are too smart and place the collar of your winter jacket with your left supporting hand when the trigger is about to break.
Not once....twice.
I did weighted the bullets yesterday to obtain a certain consistency and kept the 50,5 grains and above, most of them being 50,6 , 50,7 , 50,8 , 50,9 grains.

Looks promising. I'd give it a try with better ammo to see what it can do. SK, Eley, RWS, Lapua, etc. You can get sample packs from Tesro and others to find out what's going to work best for you without having to buy a brick.

For CCI standard and Blazer, your targets look really good. My guess is quality ammo would tighten up those 50m groups considerably.

Thanks Canuck 65 and Hardhammer,
I sanded down the channel of the forearm ...was touching at the end about 2"-3 ".
Put everything back and torqued at 20 lbs.
I will try the mods this week-end and will play with the torque.
I received stainless steel screws with hexagonal heads that will make everything easier.

Pretty well all 'match ammo' is subsonic, I would shoot better ammo and use a rear bag, if you want something cheap fill a sock with fish gravel.

Also the easiest way I have done a barrel channel was with a socket that was slightly larger than the barrel wrapped in sand paper.
